Pofficer wounded in stabbing attack at Jerusalem’s Damascus Gate

Magen David Adom said it treated the victim of the attack at the scene and evacuated him to Hadassah University Medical Center, in Jerusalem’s Ein Kerem.

Police said that the attacker was a 38-year-old Palestinian resident of the West Bank who approached Haguy Street from the Damascus Gate in the direction of two Border Police officers who were patrolling in the area.

Just as the man passed the police officers, he pulled out his knife, screamed “Allahu Akbar” [God is great] and stabbed one of them in the neck, the police spokesperson said.

Police said the officers reacted quickly, shot the assailant, and after searching his body they found another knife.

Civilian hits terror suspect with car to thwart stabbing in West Bank

Gershon Mesika, former head of the Samaria Regional Council, observed the suspect with a knife trying to attack a girl while he was driving by in his car. He drove into the suspect and as a result, his vehicle landed in the ditch beside the road.

Soldiers who were in the area closed in on the suspect and shot her. The suspect was seriously injured following the incident. Mesika remained unharmed aside from minor bruising.

“I was in my car near the hitchhiking station and I saw a terrorist who was running after a girl and someone yelled terrorist. I saw her with her drawn knife, and in a split second I rammed her with my car. She fell and then a soldier came and finished the job, he shot her,” Mesika told Army Radio on Sunday morning.

Over 50% of Israeli water used daily is derived from the sea.

Blue State Blues: Israel Solves the Water Puzzle

The news from Israel is sensational this week: more Palestinians stabbing Israelis, the release of spy Jonathan Pollard from a U.S. prison, and so one. In the day-to-day of news events, it’s easy to overlook long-term developments that are sometimes even more dramatic. One of those is Israel’s steady and successful struggle to solve the water puzzle.

Water is scarce in the region, and Israel suffers periodic droughts that make it very difficult to meet the daily needs of eight million people and a growing economy.

I have on my desk a glossy newsletter from the Jewish National Fund (JNF), the charity that has raised money to buy land and plant trees since well before Israel declared independence in 1948. Typically, I skim through or ignore these bulky publications. But this one is different. It is a celebration of Israel’s success in overcoming chronic water scarcity through desalination, recycling, conservation, infrastructure, and innovation. The opening letter from JNF chairman Ronald S. Lauder is worth quoting at length:

Nearly two decades ago, I surveyed the Kinneret–the Sea of Galilee–and I was in shock: the only freshwater reservoir in the land of Israel was running dry. I vowed that Israel’s drought and water issue would be solved. We at JNF were going to make a difference…

Prior to 1995 there were only three reservoirs in Israel. Working with Keren Kayemeth LeIsrael (KKL), JNF built 200 reservoirs between 1996 and 2005. These reservoirs were desperately needed to store recycled water and rainwater, which would then be utilized by Israeli farmers to bring food to the markets during the country’s dry season.

We started to recycle water for reuse. Everybody told us desalinization was the only solution; however, we knew that desalinization alone was not only too costly, but also years away from coming to fruition. We needed a stopgap solution. We built recycling plants and reservoirs, and began seeing a difference every day…

Democracies have a responsibility to defend themselves and are obligated to protect themselves from those who seek to undermine them, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said Tuesday, following the announcement that the Security Cabinet outlawed the northern branch of the Islamic Movement.

The northern branch seeks to undermine Israel, he said, adding that it incites to violence against innocent civilians, cooperates closely with Hamas and seeks to replace Israel with a caliphate.

“We have nothing against Islam,” Netanyahu said. “We have nothing against the Muslim citizens of Israel, who enjoy full equal rights, and the vast majority of whom are law abiding citizens. But we will continue to act against inciters, and those who encourage terrorism.”

Tuesday’s announcement of the Security Cabinet’s decision comes after weeks of intensive deliberations on the matter that began soon after the current wave of terrorism began in September.

Israel Radio reported on Tuesday that it had obtained documents showing that the Islamic Movement had received millions of shekels in recent years from Turkey, Kuwait and other countries.

Government spokesmen, including Netanyahu, have been charging for weeks that the organization is largely responsible for the incitement surrounding the Temple Mount, which is fueling the current round of terrorist attacks.

Label Europe anti-Israel: The EU is poised to make a huge mistake and hand the BDS movement a major victory

Delegitimizing Israel

On Wednesday, the European Union is slated to officially announce guidelines mandating the labeling of products from Israeli settlements. This form of economic warfare unfairly targets the Jewish state and lays the foundation for a comprehensive boycott. Put simply, the EU’s punitive act is discriminatory and undercuts the peace process with the Palestinians.

Former Israeli ambassador to the U.S. and current Knesset member Michael Oren put it bluntly last week” “The EU decision to label Israeli products is anti-Semitic.”

To expose the absurdity of the EU sanction — and reciprocate in kind — Oren placed “Made in Europe” stickers on products in an Israeli supermarket.

As he put it: “There are dozens of border disputes and ‘occupations’ in the world, but the EU decided to single out Israel. They are not labeling products from China, India or Turkey — only Israel.”

Eugene Kontorovich, a professor of law at Northwestern University and an expert on the EU’s anti-Israel economic policies, told me the bloc is mandating discriminatory labels on Israeli products at the same time it is actively fighting in court to be able to continue labeling goods from Western Sahara as “Made in Morocco.”

The EU views Western Sahara as not legally part of Morocco — just as it views the West Bank as not part of Israel.

The EU’s anti-Israel policy prompted a strongly worded bipartisan letter from 36 U.S. senators to Federica Mogherini, the EU’s foreign policy head. In the letter, sent by Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand and Ted Cruz, the lawmakers wrote: “We urge you not to implement this labeling policy, which appears intended to discourage Europeans from purchasing these products and promote a de facto boycott of Israel, a key ally and the only true democracy in the Middle East.”

Putting aside the EU’s singular treatment of Israel, it ought not be lost on us that Europe’s action comes precisely when Palestinians are engaged in a fresh wave of attacks on innocent Israelis.

Hadassah Medical Center issued an update Sunday morning on the conditions of the terror victims currently being treated at Hadassah Ein Kerem and Hadassah Mount Scopus in Jerusalem.

The 20-year-old IDF soldier who was stabbed by an Arab terrorist in Hevron on Saturday evening is now in light condition after undergoing surgery overnight.

Two patients remain hospitalized after suffering wounds in the brutal knife and gun attack on Tuesday aboard a bus traveling in Jerusalem’sArmon Hanatziv neighborhood.

A 76-year-old man remains in critical condition from that attack, while a 69-year-old woman’s condition has been defined as moderate.

A 79-year-old man injured in the second attack in Jerusalem on Tuesday – in which an Arab terrorist ran over and stabbed Jews on Malchei YisraelStreet – is hospitalized with light to moderate wounds.

The Border Policeman critically injured in the stabbing attack at Damascus Gate last Saturday has been transferred from Shaare Zedek Medical Center to Hadassah Ein Kerem; he is being treated in the hospital’s intensive care unit.

The two Jewish victims seriously injured on Monday in the stabbing attack  by two teenage Arab terrorists in Pisgat Ze’ev are being hospitalized at Hadassah Mount Scopus.

Between Ankara and Jerusalem: A festival of incitement and blood

Op-ed: The recent suicide attack in Turkey and the attempt to resume the Palestinian intifada point to one common denominator: Wherever radical Islam raises its head, the result is destruction and bloodshed.

Published: 10.13.15, 20:31 / Israel Opinion

Let’s put the events of the past two weeks, the alleged intifada, aside for a minute and turn to another conflict which has erupted against in recent months – the conflict between Turkey and the Kurds.

There were a few years of silence. It didn’t last. In the latest elections, a moderate, non-separatist Kurdish party (HDP) – which does not specialize in provocations like Knesset Members Jamal Zahalka and Haneen Zoabi (both Balad) reached an impressive achievement.

Hundreds, perhaps thousands, have already been killed in the renewed violence. The Turkish army has been given a free hand. Entire areas are under siege. There is forced transfer of residents. There are merciless bombings.

What we are not seeing are countless rights activists, thousands of cameras and protests against what Turkey is doing to the Kurdish minority. We know the rule: When Muslims kill Muslims, there are no protests and no demonstration. After all, they must keep their strength to resume the protests against Israel.

On Saturday, there was an anti-violence protest in Ankara – a calm and quiet protest. The Kurdish party took part in it. But two explosions by suicide bombers led to what’s been described as Turkey’s worst terror attack in modern history. Nearly 100 people were killed.

The Kurdish party accused President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of incitement. That appears to be a baseless claim. It’s the last thing Erdogan needs. While he is using serious violence, the free world is keeping silent because it needs Erdogan in its battle against the Islamic State.

The thing is that the Kurds are the Islamic State’s biggest enemy. So whether the Kurdish party is right or wrong, this terror attack is an outcome of political, radical Islam, whether produced by Erdogan or by ISIS. It’s true that we are talking about a triangle in which everyone fights everyone – and my enemy’s enemy is also my enemy – but this is the reality of the region, which is also spreading to Turkey’s sane areas.

Why is this happening? Why are Muslims engaging in the mass murder of other Muslims? Many explanations have collapsed in the past few years. The attempt to search for logic is usually shattered when facing the facts, which refuse to obey theories.

But it seems that by looking at Turkey, which is wallowing in its own blood, and at the attempt to resume the Palestinian intifada – one common denominator can be found: Wherever radical Islam raises its head, the result is destruction and bloodshed. This applies to Jerusalem and to Ankara, to Nigeria and to Somalia, to Afghanistan and to Syria.

US brokering talks for Gulf states to buy Israeli anti-missile system as Iran defense

Bahrain and other Persian Gulf states are in negotiations to buy the Israeli-developed Iron Dome anti-missile system to defend against “a growing arsenal of Iranian missiles”.

The Israeli weapon, which has reduced the effectiveness of rockets fired out of Gaza into Israel by about 90% would be bought through Raytheon and other American contractors who developed the Iron Dome with Israeli arms giant Rafael.

A deal for the entire Gulf Cooperation Council, which includes Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait, would be worth tens, perhaps hundreds, of billions of dollars.

It would also include longer range interceptor missiles such as David’s Sling, and the Arrow I and Arrow II which are capable of intercepting supersonic intercontinental ballistic missiles – also a joint venture between Israel and the U.S.

Mayor Of Israel’s Largest Arab City: Arab MKs Are Inciting Riots, “Destroying Coexistence”

The mayor of Nazareth, Israel’s largest majority-Arab city, blasted Arab members of Knesset in interviews on Sunday, blaming them for inciting riots and violence.

Over 200 residents of Nazareth rioted on Thursday night, setting fires and throwing rocks at security forces. Ayman Odeh, the chairman of the Joint (Arab) List party, was present at the protest before he was told to leave by Nazareth Mayor Ali Salem. In an interview on Israel’s Channel Two, Salem yelled again at Odeh, saying, “You destroyed the city. Get out of here.”

New Wave of Palestinian Terrorism Forces East Jerusalem Closure

Shooting and knife-attacks claimed the lives of three innocent Israelis and seriously injured at least 17 others.

Moral equivalence has been likened to cancer, and with good cause. It eats away at societies, eroding the individual’s moral compass and warping his or her perception of reality to such a degree that evildoers become “heroes.” It is what enables the international community to silently (or even quite vocally) condone the savagery being committed against Israelis each and every day. It is what allows the mainstream media to mislead readers and misreport facts in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, thus providing terrorists with their own public relations vehicle, free of charge.

As the death toll in the latest terrorist-double-feature climbs, Israeli officials are seriously considering shuttering East Jerusalem in an effort to manage what some are fearing is the start of a third Intifada. In the last day alone, shooting and knife-attacks claimed the lives of three innocent Israelis and seriously injured at least 17 others. The incidents involved stabbings, opening fire on innocent civilians, and plowing a car into a crowd of pedestrians. While it is difficult to keep track of each and every attack carried out against Israelis by Palestinian terrorists, particularly in these last two weeks, Arutz Sheva attempts to provide a breakdown of the last 24 hours:

In the first incident, a 60-year-old man was killed and 15 others wounded, eight seriously, in a shooting attack on a Number 78 bus traveling along Gallows Street in Armon Hanatziv. Magen David Adom and United Hatzalah paramedics at the scene described chaos and multiple severe casualties. A second, critically wounded victim succumbed to his wounds nearly two hours later, bringing the death toll in that attack up to two. The attack involved two terrorists, one of whom was shot dead by police. The second terrorist was shot and wounded, and has been taken into custody. Early investigations indicate that the terrorists intended to hijack the bus, along with its passengers. It is not yet clear what they intended to do with the vehicle or their hostages afterwards.

Minutes after that attack, a car and knife attack took place on Malchei Yisrael street. The terrorist in that attack reportedly plowed his car into a bus stop and then emerged brandishing a knife, stabbing several passersby. There are conflicted reports about the fate of the terrorist. Some say that he was injured and taken into police custody, others that he was killed at the scene. He has been identified as Jerusalem resident and Bezeq telephone company employee Alaa Abu Jamal. Reports suggest he carried out the attack using his company car.

Now, police have shuttered all roads into Jerusalem and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has called for an emergency cabinet meeting, according to Arutz Sheva.
