That the Swedish Democrats’ party leader Jimmie Åkesson has been critical of Sweden’s corona strategy in recent weeks has hardly escaped anyone.
When he recently demanded the departure of state epidemiologist Anders Tegnell in a debate article, he was met with scornful laughter for misguided criticism. But there were also those who liked his call.
Why did you demand an official’s departure?
– Tegnell is a symbol of Sweden’s corona management, it was for people to understand that the criticism is real and serious, he says as an explanation.
However, the main message was that those responsible must resign, Åkesson believes.
– Ultimately, it is a call for the government to dismiss Director-General Johan Carlson, then a new Director-General may appoint a new state epidemiologist.
“A massacre”
That around 4,700 people in Sweden have now died from the corona virus, many of them in the elderly care, sees Åkesson as a major failure.
