Greece to call referendum on new EU aid deal

(Reuters) – The Greek government will hold a referendum on a new EU aid package, calling on voters to say whether they want to adopt it or not, Prime Minister George Papandreou said on Monday.

“We trust citizens, we believe in their judgment, we believe in their decision,” he told ruling socialist party lawmakers.

Nearly 60 percent of Greeks view Thursday’s EU summit agreement on a new 130 billion euro bailout package as negative or probably negative, a survey showed on Saturday.

  1. A pity that the referendum proposed by the Greek Government was not preceded by referendums in all European countries to address the issue as to whether or not individual European states should join the new super state before it was actually created.

After all, according to Papandreou: “We trust citizens, we believe in their judgement, we believe in their decision.”

But apparently not sufficiently trustworthy for the political elite to leave the decision to join or not join the European Union to the Greek people in the first place.

Or did they actually hold a referendum there at the time?
