Finland will host a summit of UN leaders early in 2017 to find consensus on an aid plan for conflict-ridden Syria.

The proposal will likely include humanitarian assistance as well as development cooperation in Syria and neighbouring countries, according to foreign affairs secretary Jussi Nummelin of the Finnish Foreign Ministry.

The effort is aimed at providing relief for civilians caught up in the ongoing conflict in Syria, as well as at helping neighbouring countries develop capacity for accommodating large numbers of refugees fleeing the violence.

Nummelin cautioned however, that the outcome of the summit will not represent a promise of aid, nor will it offer any new commitments of assistance to Syria.

“Finland’s goal is to offer high-level support to UN relief work in this important situation, given that the war has not ended and it has become increasingly difficult to get aid through,” he explained.

The UN’s regular annual Syrian aid conference will take place later in the spring.

The ministry official said that so far no concrete date for the summit has been set. The Foreign Ministry said that the initiative for the Helsinki conference came from the UN’s development organisation, the UNDP.

NOTE: We have to come to terms with the fact that barbarians one both sides will indeed battling this one out, and we have to watch from the sidelines. While I hope non-combatants make it out alive, I wish the barbarians to be dispatched from the land of the living as soon as possible.
