A former soldier who tried to take his children to Syria has been jailed for 18 years after buying a firearm from an undercover officer during a sting operation.
Gavin Michael Rae, 36, a Muslim convert now known at Yaqub Rae, is the first former serviceman to be jailed for ISIS-related offences.
Undercover recordings revealed that Rae, from Preston, Lancashire, regarded Britain as ‘horrible’ and said the women were ‘filthy.’
He tried and failed three times to travel to Syria and then attempted to get hold of a handgun or an Uzi submachinegun.
Police were alerted to the fact that Rae was attempting to purchase a firearm and set up an undercover operation.
He eventually arranged to meet an undercover officer at Bicester Village shopping outlet near Oxford last October and told him he wanted to get hold of a firearm.
His children had been removed from his care as a result of his alleged attempt to reach Syria and he had started to follow Fathers For Justice on Facebook, writing: ‘Remember that the more you push, the harder the reaction, the greater the fall.
‘Hand back what’s truly mine or, by the permission of Allah, I’ll get what’s mine anyway and you’ll lose everything inshallah.’
