BBC documentary translates Gaza children saying ‘Jews’ as saying ‘Israelis’
In one such case a Gazan child says that the ‘yahud’ (Arabic for Jews) are massacring Palestinians, but the subtitles read ‘Israel is massacring us.’
A BBC documentary called ‘Children of the Gaza War’ has substituted ‘Israelis’ for ‘Jews’ in the subtitle translations of its interviews with Gazan children, the Jewish Chronicle reported on Wednesday.
In one such case a Gazan child says that the ‘yahud’ (Arabic for Jews) are massacring Palestinians, but the subtitles read “Israel is massacring us.”
The documentary was prepared by the BBC’s chief international correspondent Lyse Doucet, who defended her decision to use “Israeli” for the Arabic “Yahud,” since the children interviewed clearly meant Israelis when referring to their adversaries.
“We felt it was a better translation of it” said Canadian-born Doucet. “We are not trying to cover it up – we took advice on it and that was the advice given by translators.”
