A very upbeat and excited Vlad rung me up to tell the news.

Canada has suspended diplomatic relations with Iran and is expelling Iranian diplomats from Canada, Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird announced in a statement today.
“Canada has closed its embassy in Iran, effective immediately, and declared personae non gratae all remaining Iranian diplomats in Canada,” Baird said in a statement. Those diplomats must leave within five days.
“Canada’s position on the regime in Iran is well known. Canada views the Government of Iran as the most significant threat to global peace and security in the world today.”
Good news! I wish other countries would do the same.
Good for Canada. Somebody has to lead.
Several months ago, there was a showing of a film that was opposed by the Iranian embassy. A Canadian municipal theater decided to postpone showing the film but the national government intervened saying the Iranian embassy doesn’t dictate local Canadian policy. That created a minor diplomatic row between Canada and Iran. There has been bigger tension between these two countries for a while.
The $64 question is: Why now? Why did Canada break off relations with Iran now?
Think about that. Maybe you’re thinkin’ what I’m thinkin’.
I am not thinkin’ what you’re thinkin’, so please tell me what you are thinking’
Why did they still have diplomatic relations with Iran in the first place? Did Canada just now wake up and see how they are?
Canada is the real leader of the Free World right now having taken over from Australia (after the defeat of the Howard Government).
I deeply admire the bravery of the Canadian Goverment in sticking to their principles rather than playing Real Politik.
