Check this one out, sounds kind of cozy doesn’t? It’s similar to the spin placed upon Thomas Jefferson owning a copy of the koran that US congressman, Keith Ellison, placed his hand on to swear allegiance to the US Constitution. Jefferson had a copy of a koran but not from affection, or to show it affection, it was just something he acquired along the way during his lifetime.
The “treaty of Peace and Friendship was actually a piece of paper finalizing the tribute money authorized by Adams to be paid to the Barbary pirates (while they kept plundering US shipping), call it protection money as the mob does. Jefferson was outraged upon assuming office as president that the US had paid in total up to 2 million dollars. The Bey wanted even more after Washington died, as was their custom of receiving tribute exclusively for a statesman’s death, they figured he (washington) was worth around ten grand.
SLATE: Jefferson and John Adams when they went to call on Tripoli’s envoy to London, Ambassador Sidi Haji Abdrahaman. They asked him by what right he extorted money and took slaves in this way. As Jefferson later reported to Secretary of State John Jay, and to the Congress:
The ambassador answered us that [the right] was founded on the Laws of the Prophet, that it was written in their Koran, that all nations who should not have answered their authority were sinners, that it was their right and duty to make war upon them wherever they could be found, and to make slaves of all they could take as prisoners, and that every Mussulman who should be slain in battle was sure to go to Paradise.
NOTE: They also list the fact that 30% of the slaves that found their way to the US in the North American slave trade were muslim. An interesting side note is that those slaves became Muslims through the Islamic jihad against North Africa, which had already developed an extensive slave trade that the Europeans tapped into.
