The emphasis should have been from the very beginning, to exact severe punishment upon the Taliban for conspiring with the then leader of al-Qaida, the now dead Osama Bin-Laden, then leave them to fight amongst themselves.
It’s a hard for people to understand that you cannot take people from the 7th century and make them into Jeffersonian democrats, they’re culture and religion make that a near impossibility. The only future involvement should be in the form of tomahawk missles and occasional boots on the ground operations to take care of the jihadi terrorist camps that are sure to be set up once the US leaves the scene.
You can’t right all the wrongs in the world, these Afghanis are light years behind the rest of the planet. Trying to make a “working democracy” in Afghanistan is a fool’s errand. Bring the troops home now, and send them in on limited hunt and kill operations when necessary. KGS
TALIBAN: WILL YOU BE GONE BEFORE THE CHRISTMAS RUSH?
U.S. speeds up direct talks with Taliban
The administration has accelerated direct talks with the Taliban, initiated several months ago, that U.S. officials say they hope will enable President Obama to report progress toward a settlement of the Afghanistan war when he announces troop withdrawals in July.
A senior Afghan official said a U.S. representative attended at least three meetings in Qatar and Germany, one as recently as “eight or nine days ago,” with a Taliban official considered close to Mohammad Omar, the group’s leader.
State Department spokesman Michael A. Hammer on Monday declined to comment on the Afghan official’s assertion, saying the United States had a “broad range of contacts across Afghanistan and the region, at many levels. . . . We’re not going to get into the details of those contacts.”
