Ghouta, a besieged suburb of Damascus with some 400,000 inhabitants, is, he says, a scene of horrors that defy belief or description. This benighted area is the last bastion to hold out against the murderous regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, and its luckless inhabitants are being bombed, gassed and starved into submission.
‘In my years of soldiering I’ve witnessed many atrocities,’ says Hamish. ‘But I’ve never seen anything as horrific as what is going on in Ghouta now.

Few military men seek sedentary retirements and Colonel Hamish de Bretton-Gordon admits he is dismayed by the idea of a gentle slide into leisurely routine.
When he left the Army in 2011 after 23 years’ service, he swapped a career commanding troops in the world’s battlefields to volunteer in even more hazardous trouble spots.
The 54-year-old has served in both Gulf Wars, in Bosnia, Kosovo and been twice to Iraq and Afghanistan.
