Four suspected Islamic State recruiters have been detained in Belgium, with authorities saying they may have been planning new attacks.

Belgian police searched houses in the city of Antwerp on Wednesday and detained four people on suspicion of belonging to a terrorist group and trying to drum up recruits to fight with Islamist militants in Syria or Libya, state prosecutors said.

The Federal Prosecutor’s Office said in a statement that all four were charged with participating in the activities of a terrorist group.

Two were ordered arrested by an investigating judge, one was released under strict conditions and one was released with an electronic bracelet.

The statement said the four don’t appear to have links to the suicide bombers who struck the Brussels Airport and subway on March 22, killing 32 people.

‘They are suspected of trying to recruit individuals to travel to conflict zones in Syria or Libya,’ a prosecutors’ statement said.

It said no weapons or explosives were found in the house searches.

Prosecutors said initial findings of the investigation indicated there may also have been plans for attacks in Belgium, but provided no details.

Searches were carried out in the city Antwerp and in two other locations.
