Face it, Palmyra was no paradise, it’s just that Islamic State jihadis accentuated the Islam already present in that society. They’ve always had honor murders, treating of minorities with contempt, corrupted courts and street vigilantism, just not that the amount unleashed by the pious followers of Islam who were bringing reform.

Hundreds of residents have returned to the Syrian city of Palmyra, following the devastation caused by ISIS militants.

Families came in government buses from Homs to check on their homes and salvage any belongings they could.

There is no water or electricity, and it will be at least a few months before anyone can return to stay.

Maha Abderrazak was among tens of thousands of terrified civilians who fled west, many escaping with just the clothes on their backs and the few belongings they could carry by hand.

The 22-year-old is among the residents trickling back to Palmyra to salvage items such as carpets, blankets, a fridge or a few family mementos.

The emotional scenes of people hurriedly carting away belongings highlights Palmyra’s present-day human tragedy that has been largely sidelined by the magnitude of the destruction inflicted by IS militants on the world famous Roman-era ruins that stand just outside the town.

  1. Is that Paris in the no-go zones? I think they will be very at home in that mess. Its now just like home. Soon Europe will look like that. Why would anyone invite people like that int their country?
