According to Koskimäki children have also been harassed. – Yes, there have been cases of children below the age of 15 years being groped and kissed on the mouth, the actual number of minors victims is impossible to know for sure.
– Information have come through the parents, if there has been a minor in question.
It’s another story, if the child dares to tell the parents of the unfortunate situation. The molesters according to Koskimäki, are principally young men of 18 years of age.
Police have sought to influence the problem by doing educational work in reception centers.– We want to give the message that there is zero tolerance, and that we have respect for women and for equality. THE PROBLEM according to Koskimäki is, the fact that the victims do not want to raise charges against the perps or fail to report the incident at all. – The incident should be reported to the police right away in order to catch the persons concerned. Their children should be instructed that this does not have to be accepted.
Asylum seekers and harassment hit the headlines when a group of about a thousand foreign men convened in Cologne, Germany, during the New Year’s celebration. Part of the men are suspected of committing robberies and harassing women. According to Koskimäki the police had come to know that similar situation could happen during the New Year celebrations, also in Helsinki, which is why the police had an enhanced presence during the celebration.
