MOSCOW, January 24 (Itar-Tass) — Twenty-there people were killed and 130 injured a result of an explosion at Moscow’s Domodedovo Airport on Monday, January 24.

“According to available information, an explosion occurred at Domodedovo’s arrivals hall at 16:32 Moscow time,” a spokeswoman for the Moscow inter-regional investigation department on transport of Russia’s Investigation Committee, Tatyana Morozova, told Itar-Tass.

Preliminary reports put the casualties at up to 20 people. The Ministry of Health and Social Development also said initially that 20 people had been affected. Witnesses say that “very many people were injured” and the building of the airport was filled with smoke.

Police said the explosion had occurred at the entrance from the international arrivals section. The investigation is underway. From 14:00 until the explosion, passengers from some two dozen international flights, including from New York, Dubai, Ashgabat, Cairo, London, Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Tokyo, Hurgada, Istanbul, might have been staying in the area of the explosion that occurred not far from one of the restaurants.

Three men are being sought in the case of the explosion that hit Moscow’s Domodedovo airport with the power of 7 kg of TNT, Interfax reported Jan. 24. The three had lived in the Moscow region for “some time,” according to an unnamed official. RIA Novosti reported the explosion was packed with submunitions. A criminal case has been opened under Article 205 of the Criminal Code, the so-called “terrorist act,” according to the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation. Investigators with the main investigation department and forensic experts with the Central Office Investigative Committee have arrived at the scene. Investigators with Domodedovo city and Moscow’s central investigation department are assisting.

Heavy smoke at the site of the blast at Moscow’s Domodedovo International Airport is hampering efforts to find additional victims, a Russian Health Ministry spokesman said, Russia Today reported Jan. 24. Airport staff destroyed a brick wall near the luggage claim area to allow passengers to leave, and the airport is being evacuated. Eighty emergency teams are on the scene. Reports suggest the explosive device was packed with shrapnel.

Domodedovo airport has taken extra security measures to prevent more attacks, particularly jammers that block the signal of cellular phones, a law enforcement official said Jan. 24, Interfax and Itar-Tass reported. The official said the attack occurred in a baggage-claim area, though it is currently unclear whether or not the bomb was placed in a suitcase. Passengers from as many as 24 international flights from New York, Dubai, Ashgabat, Cairo, London, Vienna, Munich, Hamburg, Tokyo and Istanbul may have been congregated around the site of the explosion, which was reportedly near one of the airport’s restaurants. The Russian government has confirmed that 31 people were killed and 130 wounded in the blast.

  2. Today Medvedev and Putin said there are ‘limits’ to what they can do to secure its citizens. There it is! There are limits to go on the offensive. Like declaring Islam banished and anyone Muslim must leave or convert to RO or some other religions. Nope it’s all about……poverty!!!! That’s what they said.
