The average American would be outraged to know that a teacher would knowingly and willingly browbeat and belittle a student in class for her choice of a presidential candidate, but that is exactly what happened, in front of a camera no less, in a grade school in Ashville, North Carolina.
But this is no ordinary teacher, she is Diantha Harris, the ex-wife of Roy Harris, the man who asked George Bush Sr. in the Rose Garden of the White House, to visit his family in N.Carolina in 1992.
Bush Sr. obliged and accompanied with his wife Barbara, visited the man’s house and spent time talking with his family. It was a media affair. In a Swedish documentary by Folke Rydén and Bengt Norborg, titled “From Bill to Barack” that aired last night on Finland’s Swedish language channel 5, the two men are shown traveling throughout the US interviewing people who had become news stories themselves during the 92′ presidential elections.
One of the scenes in the documentary however, offers a disturbing look into how a classroom can be manipulated by an ideologically driven teacher who, not only disparages a child for supporting McCain for president, but describes the Iraq war as a “senseless one”, and that her father could be in Iraq for a hundred years due to McCain becoming president.
Your heart is wrenched when you see the face of this little girl, as she sees the students sitting around her, stare at her in silence, with the teacher lording over her all high and mighty.
The teacher pretends to allow for diversity of opinion in the class as she asks her students who they support for president, but when a couple of students say they support McCain, she exclaims….”oh Lord” and then “…oh Jesus“.
The Tundra Tabloids was in shock and with mouth wide open during the whole exchange and diatribe, as well as during the teacher’s explanation later on, that “she supports a students right to choose who to support“.

Like I have some students that support John McCain, and when they told me that, I said ah … “that’s good’ and I just moved on. So, I think that everybody is entitled to their own personal opinion. And we have something in our school system that called ‘Kids Voting’, and in my class….Barack Obama won. (Smiling).

Does this teacher have any clue what that girl must go through every day worrying about her father in Iraq? I was shocked when I saw the clip of an interaction between a Cumberland County Schools teacher and her students as posted on YouTube. While neutral discussion of the political process is appropriate, at no time, particularly with elementary students, should a teacher infuse his/her political views into the discussion. Most disconcerting was the military slant that made its way into this discussion. We are a military community, serving over 15,000 military students and their families. We value the sacrifices, not only of the military parents but also those of their families.
We believe that military children are our children, military spouses are many of our employees, and military service men and women are our heroes. We proudly serve our military children and have received national awards for our support of military families.
I was particularly disturbed to see the uncomfortable position in which our children were placed due to the inappropriate actions of one of our teachers. Please be assured that the actions exhibited in this video are not consistent with the vision of the CCS. Moreover, the actions of one teacher do not represent the 7000 employees in our organization.
Once the video was brought to my attention, I immediately launched an investigation. Personnel laws prevent me from releasing information regarding individual employees and personnel action taken. I can assure you that upon completion of the investigation, I will take appropriate action.

I am a teacher in Asheville where Ms. Haris once worked. Please do not think we are all like her. She is an embarrassment to my profession, to women and to society. A teacher has much responsibility to the educating of our young people. Class discussion should be thought provoking, stimulating, and most importantly safe.
The reason Ms. Harris no longer teaches in Asheville should be clear in viewing the video.
I am grateful that most comments are civil and firmly against this treatment of a student by a teacher.. what saddens me is the vile language of one post. Does this person believe that reasonable people will be swayed by filthy language? It is no better than this teacher herself. And to say Obama is NOT their president just shows part of the problem- we can never change anything with this attitude! To make myself very clear, the treatment of this girl was gut-wrenching to me. The teacher should, at a minimum apologize to this child and her family! Firing? Not sure. But she was terrible to treat her class this way, and leaving her alone is not appropriate.
I emailed the video to Terri Robertson on 11/05/08, the director of Board of Election at Cumberland County. His reply is below. I am assuming that he forwarded my email to Dr. William Harrison, the CCS’ Superintendent.
