Finnish leaders react to Turku attack
Finland’s political leadership expressed shock and offered condolences after a knife attack in Turku on Friday in which two people died and at least six were injured. Prime Minister and President posted identical messages on Twitter, saying that they were following the situation closely.

“The government is following the situation in Turku closely, and the police operation that is ongoing,” wrote President Sauli Niinistö at 5:09pm. “The government will meet later today.”
Prime Minister Juha Sipilä posted an identical message two minutes later. He also posted a more personal message expressing condolences for the victims and their loved ones, saying that today’s events had shocked the nation and wishing strength and recovery to the injured.
The official presidential account announced that Niinistö, Sipilä, deputy Prime Minister Petteri Orpo and Interior Minister Paula Risikko had been in touch with each other to discuss the incident.
The incident began at 16:02 and was over by 16:05 when young male suspect had been shot in the leg and detained by police. According to the main Turku hospital, all of the victims were adults.
