Charges for 22 over neo-Nazi riot in Jyväskylä

Central Finland prosecutors have charged a group of 22 members of the neo-Nazi Finnish Resistance Movement with assault and rioting at a demonstration in Jyväskylä one year ago. One of the accused is the same FRM co-founder suspected of assault and involuntary manslaughter following a fatal attack at Helsinki’s Central Railway Station in September.

The Central Finland prosecutor’s office has concluded consideration of charges in the case of a group of Finnish Resistance Movement demonstrators suspected of assault and riot in August 2015.

According to the police blotter some of the individuals attending a demonstration by the neo-Nazi Finnish Resistance Movement began to assault passersby and to aggressively prevent police at the scene from taking action. The demonstrators also caused a disturbance at a nearby department store.

Central Finland prosecutors have decided to press charges against a total of 22 members of the neo-Nazi group. Three people were charged for inciting a violent riot, the most serious of the indictments, which carries a maximum sentence of four years in prison.

The others – 19 altogether – have been charged with violent rioting, which has a maximum penalty of two years of jail time.

Seven of the group were slapped with additional charges of assault and two with obstructing officials.

The suspects are all neo-Nazis from Finland and Sweden and one of the accused is the same man suspected of involuntary manslaughter and assault following a fatal attack on a bystander at a demonstration by the neo-Nazi group outside Helsinki Central Railway Station in September.

The prosecutor’s office has lodged the deposition with the Central Finland District Court and the court documents have been sealed until the case goes to trial. The court has not yet set a date for the trial.
