A Muslim U.S. citizen has been named as one of two suspects shot dead in a dramatic police shootout on a residential street in San Bernardino after masked gunmen massacred 14 and injured another 17 at a conference center on Wednesday.
Police said the pair, a man and a woman, were killed in a gun battle with police after the mass shooting at a government holiday party held at the Inland Regional Center in San Bernardino. Authorities said a third person remains on the run and a fourth is being questioned.
Emergency services treat victims on the tarmac as police issued alerts to find as many as three shooters
A law enforcement official identified Syed Farook, a Muslim American, as one of the dead suspects.
His brother-in-law Farhan Khan spoke at a press conference held at the offices of the Council on American-Islamic Relations in Anaheim to say he was stunned to hear of his relative’s involvement in the shooting.
Khan, who is married to Farook’s sister, said he last spoke to him about a week ago. He said he had ‘absolutely no idea why he would do this. I am shocked myself.’
‘I just cannot express how sad I am for what happened today,’ Khan said. ‘I am very sad that people lost their lives. I am shock that something like this could happen.’
Khan says other family members asked him to speak at the news conference, and to express their sadness over the shootings.
Sources told NBC News that Farook’s brother is also involved. According to the Los Angeles Times, Farook was a U.S. citizen.

After the shooting in San Bernardino, California, President Obama went on CBS News to talk about gun control.
It is unclear whether there was just one shooter or multiple shooters at the time of publication, but they were reportedly still at large as Obama weighed in.
“The one thing we do know is that we have a pattern now of mass shootings in this country that has no parallel anywhere else in the world,” he said, during an interview with CBS anchor Norah O’Donnell. Obama argued in favor of gun control laws that he says could prevent mass shootings, including a law that would ban people on the national “no-fly list” from purchasing firearms.

Police Chief: San Bernardino Shooting Well-Planned, Wasn’t Spontaneous

San Bernardino’s police chief confirmed that the mass shooting at a county Christmas banquet did not look like a spontaneous attack due to the amount of planning, devices, weapons and tactical gear involved.
Chief Jarrod Barguan told reporters in a late-night press conference the shooting suspects, both killed in a gunbattle with some 20 officers at the end of a pursuit, have been identified as Syed Farook, 28, and Tashfeen Malik, 27. Farook was a U.S.-born citizen; the chief wasn’t sure of Malik’s background. He said he had no information on whether either had a criminal record.
Barguan said there was a relationship between the two; CBS News reported that the pair had been married for two years. CAIR said earlier that Farook and his wife have a 6-month-old baby.
Farook was an environmental specialist at the county health department. He had attended the Christmas party last year, and this year left the party early “angry” under circumstances that led police to the Redlands residence. The Daily Beast reported that Farook’s mother lived there.
