Fistfights for the ferry: New chaos on Kos when Pakistanis, Afghans and Iranians erupt into wild brawl as tensions boil over while waiting to be registered as migrants
Riot police did nothing as more than 50 asylum seekers from Afghanistan, Pakistan and Iran (left) threw rocks and exchanged blows near a passenger ship where hundreds of migrants were being registered (top right). It is thought the brawl erupted because the Asian migrants have little chance of being processed on the Eleftherios Venizelos ferry today. Greek authorities have given priority to Syrians (bottom right) who are considered refugees because they are fleeing their country’s bitter civil war.
Meanwhile boatloads of migrants have continued to arrive on the island, where many have already been sleeping rough on the streets. The International Organization for Migration (IOM) warned the number of asylum seekers to reach Europe will top 250,000 by the end of August – and has already surpassed the total of 219,000 for the whole of last year.
