Tuomioja: Finland could accept more Syrian refugees

The violent conflict in Syria has displaced more than six million people within the country and has forced over 3.2 million to seek refuge abroad. Finnish Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja now says that Finland is examining a move to accept more of these refugees.

Tuomioja was in Berlin on Tuesday as one of 20 foreign ministers joined by 10 international organisations at an conference on the Syrian refugee situation.

“According to aid organizations and the UNHCR response is badly lagging behind target,” Tuomioja told Yle.

He added that in international comparisons of assistance to Syrian refugees, Finland is “honourably involved”. More, he said will be forthcoming.

“The need to accept more refugees will also be examined in Finland,” the Foreign Minister pledged, adding that there is agreement on the issue at least between the Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The number of refugees who have fled the Syrian conflict now in Finland is counted in the hundreds, whereas in neighbouring Sweden, the figure is already in the tens of thousands.
