Concerns abroad on antisemitism of Dutch youth
NRC.NL: DOMESTIC- The Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles has asked Prime Minister Rutte for inquiry into anti-Semitism in the Netherlands. Reports De Telegraaf this morning . The international Jewish organization is concerned by a recent broadcast of the public broadcaster.
In the NTR program ‘Unauthorized Authority’, which aired on February 24, a number of Turkish youth said that they liked the murder of millions of Jews in World War II. “What Hitler did to the Jews, I am satisfied with it,” said one boy.
The Rabbi Abraham Cooper and director Mark Weitzman of the Simon Wiesenthal Center spoke in a letter to Rutte of the “extreme anti-Semitic statements.” “Even more shocking was to hear that their prejudices was shared by indigenous boys and girls,” said Cooper and Weitzman. The Turkish boys said in the program that many Dutch friends agree with them.
CIDI: RESEARCH INTO ANTI-SEMITISM AMONG STUDENTS
The Centre for Information and Documentation on Israel (CIDI) asked Bussemaker Minister of Education (PvdA) the day after the broadcast of anti-Semitic prejudices among high school students nationwide to investigate. “It is the responsibility of the national government to discrimination in any form whatsoever, to fight,” said the CIDI.
Previous research among Amsterdam school students showed that there are still many prejudices about Jews existing. A study for a Master’s thesis was done that showed many pupils consider Jews as “rich and greedy”.
DOCUMENTARIST IN HIDING AFTER RECEIVING DEATH THREATS
The creator of the program ‘Unauthorized Authority’, the Arnhem scientist Mehmet Sahin, last week went into hiding because of death threats. The municipality of Arnhem confirmed today in NRC Handelsblad of broadcasting a message about NTR.
After the show he received death threats from the Islamic community. On the advice of Mayor Pauline Krikke, Sahin and his family a few days in hiding. In addition, the residents have started a petition to get him out of the neighborhood. The municipality has announced that the Public Prosecutor is investigating the case.
Parliamentarian Ahmed Marcouch (PvdA) is parliamentary questions about the threats. “It is appalling that anyone should be afraid because he has done something which we all should do: teach children not to hate,” says Marcouch. He hopes that people from the Turkish community will show support for the scientist. “The community would have to distance themselves from this criminal behavior, because that’s what death threats are”.
