SIMON WEISENTHAL CENTER SENDS NORWEGIAN MINISTER OF JUSTICE A LETTER CONCERNING THE BRANDING OF A JEWISH STUDENT…….

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 13, 2012
WIESENTHAL CENTER PRESSES NORWEGIAN AUTHORITIES TO ACT FOLLOWING FIREBRANDING Of ISRAELI-NORWEGIAN TEEN

The Simon Wiesenthal Center today demanded that Norwegian authorities take immediate action against the perpetrators following yesterday’s fire-branding of a teenage student whose father is Israeli. The incident happened at a school barbeque in Oslo when classmates heated a coin in the fire and pressed it on the boy’s neck, leaving visible burns. The school failed to contact his mother following the incident and the perpetrator received only a mild rebuke from a teacher. This is not the first time the teenager has been the target of anti-Semitic abuse. In 2010, his mother told Norwegian Broadcasting that she feared for her son’s life after he received death threats and being called “Jewish Pig” and “Jewish Satan.” She said that in every instance, school staff failed to intervene.

UPDATE: Jpost has it also.

Grete Faremo, Minister of Justice and Public Security,

Madam Minister,

The Simon Wiesenthal Centre is an international Jewish human rights organization with a worldwide membership of 440,000. Established in 1977, with headquarters in Los Angeles, it draws the lessons of the Holocaust to the analysis of contemporary issues of prejudice and discrimination. The Centre is an NGO in consultative status to the United Nations, UNESCO, the OSCE, the Organization of American States and the Council of Europe.

We are shocked to learn of the firebanding of a Jewish boy at an Oslo secondary school barbecue on Monday.

Apparently, this child has been the subject of antisemitic bullying and violence for the past two years, reportedly, because his father is Israeli.

What is even more astonishing is that, despite the mother’s report of assaults on her son to NRK radio evening news in 2010, there has been no reaction by the school, the police or governmental authorities.

The boy has stated that he must stay clear of Norwegian and Muslim children and hide his parentage to avoid continued antisemitic attacks.

Madam Minister, these young school hatemongers are the Breivik racists  of Norway’s future. You have a responsibility to protect every threatened child and, especially, this victim targetted simply for being Jewish.

The silence of the school, the police and your government is too reminiscent of another Norway, under the WWII Nazi collaborator, Quisling.

Our Centre urges your immediate investigation of this case and protective and judicial action, as continued silence is tantamount to complicity.

Most respectfully,

Dr. Shimon Samuels
Director for International Relations

  1. The school has clearly shown it’s an accomplice of the hate mongers who attack the Jewish student. They help the attackers continue their abusive behavior by giving them a mild rebuke. This tells the haters they should not fear the school’s involvement and they are free to continue attacking the Jewish student.

I’m extremely pleased to see the Simon Wiesenthal Center getting involved. Now the Norway school is in the bright, hot spotlight and cannot hide. The Simon Wiesenthal Center will not forget and they most certainly will NOT back down. I say good on them! 🙂

  2. I think that the kids who have participated in it should be taken from their parents and placed in forter care at different towns. Also, they should fire all staff that didn’t do anything to stop it – and prevent them from working with children.
