Dutch Minister of Foreign Affairs apologizes to Surinaam
Stef Blok Minister of Foreign Affairs has apologized to Surinaam for his statement that Surinaam was a failed state. In a letter to his Surinaam colleague, Yldiz Pollack-Beighle he admitted that he had made statements that he shouldn’t have made.
He also admitted that he had used illustrations which were unfortunate. Blok also apologized to the former Dutch colonies, the Islands of Aruba, Curaçao, and Saint Martin.
In his disputed chat during a meeting for Dutch people working at international organizations, Blok dismissed Suriname as a failed state . The indication of ‘ failed state ‘ is usually reserved for countries where governance and the rule of law are totally lacking, such as Somalia. But Blok also included Suriname, because the different population groups would not live together properly.
