A disgraced Imam has fled the country just days before he was due to be sentenced for a string of sex attacks in the 1980s.
The 57-year-old religious leader Hafiz Rahman is believed to have fled to Bangladesh from Dudley, West Midlands, after being convicted of abusing two young girls – one while she read from the Koran.
He had been released on conditional bail ahead of sentencing, and one of his victims has said she is ‘extremely angry’ that her abuser has managed to evade justice.
The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, told ITV News: ‘I’m extremely angry at what has happened, getting that guilty verdict was a victory for me and my nightmare was finally over.
‘Now he has run away like a guilty man and I’m left wondering how this happened and why it has happened. Trust has gone.’
Rahman had been Imam of Queens Cross Mosque in Dudley at the time of the attacks and had abused one of his young victims – then aged between seven and eight – as she read from Islam’s most holy text.
A police investigation was launched in 2012 when the woman came forward to make a complaint, but following his arrest he denied even knowing the girl.
