UK Government Blocks Local Councils from Boycotting Israeli Products

Conservative officials claim that leftwing councils have been encouraged to boycott Israeli products by Jeremy Corbyn
The British government looks to stop “leftwing” boycott and divestment campaigns.

The British government will prevent local authorities from boycotting Israeli products in order to stem the “militant actions of leftwing councils.”

Under new rules intended to block councils encouraged by the Labour Party leadership of Jeremy Corbyn, local authorities must halt politically motivated boycott and divestment campaigns against U.K. defense companies and Israel.

Minister Matthew Hancock claimed the policy was created to prevent “playground politics” in councils.

The movement to shun Israeli products is known as the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign, an international Palestine solidarity movement modeled on the campaign to boycott apartheid South Africa in the 1970s and 80s.

At the end of last year, one of the U.K’s biggest councils voted to boycott goods from Israeli settlements in the West Bank. Councillors in Leicester said the boycott would stand “until Israel withdraws from Palestinian occupied territories.”

Further, during his leadership campaign, Corbyn said he would implement a two-way arms embargo on Israel if he were to become prime minister in 2020, and endorsed BDS.
