  • Mayor of Teteghem, near Dunkirk, claims the ring is run by ‘English mafia’
  • Police source claims the arrest are the first of many over the weekend

Four men with British links have been arrested as part of a large French and Belgian police operation to smash trafficking gangs ferrying migrants across the Channel.

The suspected people smugglers – said to be connected to British addresses and using British-registered vehicles including luxury cars – were detained on Thursday night.

They are accused of being part of an armed people-smuggling gang operating from a migrant camp at Teteghem, near Dunkirk.

The arrests come as six other suspects were charged yesterday FRI with assisting illegal immigration from Calais.

The four Albanian men and two French women are accused of organising dozens of smuggling operations – 24 of which were successful and involved 149 Albanian migrants entering the UK illegally.

A highly placed source at Dunkirk said: ‘I have it on good authority that operations to counter people smuggling from the French ports of Boulogne , Calais and Dunkirk as well as other ports in Belgium including Ostend and Zeebruggee which have already begun will be intensified this weekend and further arrests will be made.’

The British-linked gang is believed to have been operating from Teteghem for several years.

More than 30 British-registered cars have been seized by French police over the last 12 months alone.
