Hamad’s fast track to Eldorado: Sudanese migrant who was in Italy five weeks ago is now in UK thanks to free train rides across Europe (and he wants his family to join him)

Hamad Said journeyed more than 2,000 miles from Sicily to Birmingham at a cost of €76 – around £53 – with French and Italian authorities simply waving him through en route to the UK. Mr Said said the the two countries helped him by providing free train rides. And he claimed that even when he was eventually stopped by police in Marseille, they told him he had to leave the country. He replied that he was off to England, to which the officers simply said: ‘OK.’ They then gave him a piece of paper that allowed him to travel free on trains across the country. The astonishing ease at which he made it to Calais is likely to raise questions on how mainland EU countries are fuelling the flow of migrants headed for Britain.
