Finnish officials say they are on standby to tighten security at Helsinki Vantaa airport, following a warning from US intelligence chiefs that terrorists in Syria and Yemen could be working on developing bombs that can evade airport security and bring down aircraft.
The US department of homeland security announced that checks will be stepped up at certain overseas airports with direct flights into the United States.
Finland’s transport safety authority Trafi said they expect to hear from US officials as early as Monday next week about possible tightened airport security requirements.
The Reuters news service reported on Thursday that US security chiefs believe the terrorist network al-Qaeda is developing explosives that can evade detection at airports. As a result Trafi say they expect new, tighter security restrictions to be issued.
