100 Egyptians taken hostage in eastern Libya

Armed men demand release of Libyan detainee held in Egypt

(ANSAmed) – TRIPOLI, JUNE 19 – One hundred Egyptian lorry drivers were taken hostage on Wednesday in eastern Libya, reported Egyptian authorities in contact with their Libyan counterparts.

According to the Egyptian daily Masry Al-Youm, armed men stopped 50 lorries and told the drivers to contact the tribal leaders of the Egyptian town Matrouh to negotiate their release in exchange for the liberation of a Libyan prisoner serving a life sentence in Egypt. Egyptians are often targeted in Libya. In recent days the foreign ministry in Cairo asked the country’s citizens not to go to Libya and called on those already in the neighboring nation to use extreme caution.
