Amnesty alleges racist attacks against Roma

The Roma are increasingly used in EU countries victims of violence and exclusion. Amnesty International is particularly critical of the passive attitude of governments, whereby offenders are only encouraged.

Amnesty International has called upon the EU states to take decisive action against “increasing racist attacks” on Roma. The systematic discrimination against Roma will in many places “tacitly” accepted, criticized the Secretary General of the German section of the human rights organization, Selmin Caliskan, on the occasion of International Roma Day on Tuesday.

The Human Rights Commissioner of the Federal Government, Christoph Strässer (SPD), said that the situation of Sinti and Roma was a cause “of serious concern”.

“It is totally unacceptable that in some places in Europe must Roma live in constant fear of violence or attacks,” said Caliskan.

“Misrepresentation”

Violent offenders would “encouraged by the passive attitude of the governments that tolerate a systematic discrimination against Roma tacitly”.
