5 Soldiers Killed in Attack on Army Post in Yemen
Security officials in Yemen say four soldiers and an army officer have been killed in an attack on a military post in northern Yemen.
Gunmen launched the attack Friday with bombs, rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns in the el Wadi district near the oil fields in Hadramawt province. Officials say five people were wounded.
No one claimed responsibility for the attack, though al-Qaida’s local branch has launched assaults there before.
17 dead in Iraq violence as elections loom
Baghdad (AFP) – Violence across Iraq killed 17 people Friday while security forces killed another 15 militants in clashes south of Baghdad, the latest in a surge of bloodshed ahead of parliamentary elections.
The shootings and bombings, which also wounded dozens more, came with campaigning in full swing for the April 30 election and with violence at its highest level since 2008.
The unrest has been principally driven by anger in the Sunni Arab community over alleged mistreatment at the hands of the Shiite-led government and security forces, as well as a spillover from the civil war in neighbouring Syria.
Apart from the capital, Friday’s violence struck in predominantly Sunni areas of Nineveh, Salaheddin and Kirkuk provinces to the north, and in Anbar to the west, while security forces engaged in a firefight with insurgents south of Baghdad, security and medical officials said.
The clashes, which broke out during attempted raids of militant strongholds in Yusifiyah, Latifiyah and Jurf al-Sakhr, left 15 militants dead, while three members of the security forces were also killed.
Elsewhere, a suicide bomber killed an army captain and his son when he blew himself up on the doorstep of the officer’s home in Baiji, while bombings in Baghdad and in the northern provinces killed six others.
Gunmen also shot dead two anti-Al-Qaeda militiamen in Salaheddin’s capital Tikrit.

After being shot five times by Taliban militiamen, 2-year-old Abuzar Ahmad woke up from a coma on Sunday and asked for his mom.
The toddler didn’t yet realize that everyone he loved the most in the world—his mom, journalist dad, and two siblings—had perished during a bloody attack inside a Kabul hotel.
Abuzar lingered between life and death for several days, fighting to triumph over a severe shrapnel wound to his head. Miraculously, he survived.
“Now he’s completely in recovery mode,” his cousin 25-year-old Turaj Rais said. “Abuzar gives me hope. We are looking forward to a bright future for him.”
Abuzar’s dad, well-known Agence-France Presse reporter Sardar Ahmad, had taken his family to Kabul’s Serena hotel on March 20 to celebrate the Persian new year. The Ahmads were eating a buffet dinner when four teenage gunman entered the restaurant and unleashed their fury on the customers.
