RUSSIAN TAKEOVER OF UKRAINE’S CRIMEA AREA RAISES QUESTION OF FINLAND JOINING NATO TO NEW LEVEL……..

This has to be the longest running political question in Finnish history, whether or not to join NATO.

Ever since the fall of the Berlin Wall, Finnish politicians have been tossing this football around for what almost seems like forever. Personally, though I feel like NATO’s shelf life has long since expired, especially since it depends greatly upon competent US participation, which means not only in leadership, but in funding as well, something of which former is in great lack of, and the latter, well, the writing is on the wall, the debt ridden U.S. simply does not have the funds any more.

NOTE: This might be a little too much, too late scenario.

Time to solve NATO question

Russia is undermining European security

For the third time since the end of the Cold War, Russian military has set its boots on the ground of a sovereign European nation. Russia has violated its agreements and ignored all protests. A great power intoxicated with self-confidence, Russia is using power politics ruthlessly to push its goals.

The bloody wars in Transnistria and Georgia, the civil war waged with Russian weaponry in Syria, and the illegal occupation of the Crimea in Ukraine are an indication of what Russia is capable of. Moscow feels that it can further its strategic interests by flouting the rules and rejecting international law.

Russia has challenged the security architecture outside NATO repeatedly and has managed to shoot the system full of holes. Moreover, Russia has tested the defence capabilities of NATO countries throughout the time that the alliance has existed. Yet Russia has never carried out a military aggression into the territory of a NATO member state.

In Finland, many still think that appeasing Russia is the best way to conduct our security policy. To support this notion, many claim that Russia poses no threat to Finland. Many may even ask, why would ordinary Russians want to attack Finland — as if this was something that they would have any say in.

Why should Finland continue “sitting on the fence” between the East and the West? Russia has exerted pressure on its neighbours to the extent of its capacity, and appeasement has only given rise to more demands from Moscow. Finland’s membership in NATO would anger Moscow for the very reason that it would diminish its ability to put pressure on us.
