Anti-Israel bigotry and bias anti-Semitism

Eric Hoffer is tops, one of my favorite modern philosophers…just picked up a paperback copy of True Believers,  thoughts on the nature of mass movements. An excellent read.

Violence is essential to fanatical mass movements. “Violence breeds fanaticism….and fanaticism begets violence.” “Islam imposed its faith by force, yet the coerced Muslims displayed a devotion to the new faith more ardent than that of the first Arabs engaged in the movement.”

  1. Good stuff, KGS. I have been aware of Eric Hoffer’s work for quite a while, and about a week ago, I quoted him on the concept of fanaticism on someone else’s blog.

“Passionate hatred can give meaning and purpose to an empty life. Thus people haunted by the purposelessness of their lives try to find a new content not only by dedicating themselves to a holy cause but also by nursing a fanatical grievance. A mass movement offers them unlimited opportunities for both.”

In other words, people with too much time on their hands, like OWS, Antifa groups, pro-Palestinian protesters, or Muslim clerics and Salafi militants yapping on about moral purity all the time.

    1. Thanks Anushirvan, I really respect this man’s insights. You are exactly right, sanctimonious people with far too much time on their hands, that’s the crowd most likely to the most damage.
