The Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, has urged OIC Member States to play pivotal role in addressing Islamophobia, noting that the phenomenon has taken a new dimension that has overwhelmed the OIC.
In his speech to the 35th session of the Islamic Commission on Economic, Cultural and Social Affairs (ICECS) at the OIC General Secretariat on Monday 18 June 2012, Ihsanoglu stated that “Islamophobia has moved to a level where it is now being exploited in electoral campaigns in Europe.” He explained that recent developments, particularly which emerged in France’s recent presidential elections, confirms the growth of ultra conservatism in Europe, taking advantage of xenophobia, especially Muslim foreigners.
