Matthew Schmitz believes he is winning the debate he’s currently waging at NRO with Dr.Andrew Bostom on the nature of sharia and the need to ban it from being used in US court of law. Looking at his (Schmitz’s) argumentation and the comments to his and Bostom’s posts, it looks clearly being decided in Bostom’s favor.
Schmitz main Achilles heel is his steadfast, dogged belief, that Islam ”is like any other religious belief system”, though the facts (you know, those stubborn things) speak otherwise. Paul Kotik elucidates the main point for us in the comments to the Schmitz’ article responding to Bostom:
Much of what Schmitz writes would be sound if Islam were properly regarded as a religion. If Islam, Judaism and Christianity are all religions, then the word “religion” means next to nothing. Islam is properly regarded as a political ideology, and ought to be treated in law and in the street as would any intrinsically anti-Constitutional, seditious belief system.
