How much you want to bet Grandpa Dufus had something to do with it? Finland has been vying for a more international role in the peace racket, and it looks like it finally hit pay dirt. If it quickly becomes a bash Israel forum, it will soon join the other badly stained nordic countries of Sweden and Norway in the Scandinavian Hall of Shame. KGS
NOTE: I think of Finland’s foreign minister, Erkki Tuomioja, the same way I think of gum stuck to the bottom of my shoe, with former president, Martti Ahtisaari, fighting for Tuomioja’s coveted spot.
Finland to host high-profile Mideast conference
Finland will host a broad Middle East disarmament conference next year. The meeting will focus on establishing a zone free of nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Friday named Finnish under-secretary of state for foreign affairs Jaakko Laajava as the facilitator of preparations for the conference, announcing the appointment to the UN General Assembly in New York together with Russia, the UK and the US.
President Tarja Halonen said that becoming the host country for the meeting was an honour for Finland.
“A zone free of weapons of mass destruction in the Middle East would be a major contribution to disarmament and non-proliferation as well as to regional and global security,” she said in a statement. “It is now our joint responsibility to succeed.”
Finland’s Foreign Minister, Erkki Tuomioja, has noted that this challenging task represents significant recognition of Finland.
