Adnkronos: “Tehran, 2 Aug. (AKI) – Iranian president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad on Monday challenged US president Barack Obama to a debate when they attend the opening of the United Nations General Assembly next month in New York.
During a live broadcast of a speech on Iranian state television, Ahmadinejad said he welcomed a “face to face” debate on “global issues” to “see which of the two has better ideas.”
Similar challenges in the past with the White House have been dismissed as propaganda.
The Iranian president’s latest challenge comes soon after the US and UN approved new rounds of economic sanctions against the Islamic Republic.
Washington and many of its allies worry that Iran’s uranium enrichment programme is for the purpose of developing nuclear arms. Tehran denies the accusations, saying its atomic programme is for energy and medical research.”
