MULTICULTURAL ENRICHMENT IN FINLAND CONTINUES WITH ENGLISH ONLY BASED WEBSITE FOR IMMIGRANTS…….

Immigrants’ Website Launched – Controversy over Language

A new online service has opened for the use of immigrants and organisations promoting multiculturalism in Finland. The aim of the Monimos.fi website is to make it easier for immigrants to work together and participate in debate in society. However, not everyone is pleased that the main language of the pages is English.
The launch of the Monimos service, which is coordinated by the Ministry of Justice, was accompanied by intense debate, especially concerning the language issue. A number of small immigrants’ organisations were unhappy that the pages, which are meant to unite immigrant groups, are in English.
“One of our main aims is to integrate into Finland, and learning the Finnish language is one step to this end”, said Abdirahim Hussein, a member of the board of one immigrant organisation Moniheli.
He notes that English is not an official language among immigrants.
“We have many Russians, for instance, among whom there are many who speak little English”, Hussein pointed out.
