IN UK COURT: MOTHER OF HONOUR VICTIM TURNS TO HUSBAND ‘WHAT DID YOU DO TO OUR DAUGHTER……!

Tulay Goren, 15, went missing more than ten years ago after falling in love with an older man her parents did not approve of. Her body has never been found. Yesterday Hanim Goren looked directly at her husband Mehmet in the dock and demanded an answer.

As he stared intently back, Mrs Goren said: ‘Look at my face. What did you do to Tulay? Say it so that I can…’, before being stopped by trial judge Mr Justice Bean. Mehmet Goren, 45, was the last to see his daughter alive.

He, along with his brothers Ali Goren, 55, and Cuma Goren, 42, is accused of her murder. Mrs Goren, 45, has broken a ten-year silence over Tulay’s disappearance to give evidence against the three brothers at the Old Bailey.

Yesterday she told the court she believed her husband was responsible for the Turkish schoolgirl’s disappearance in January 1999.

Mrs Goren said: ‘It was Mehmet who disappeared Tulay. I am sure of that.’

She added: ‘At the beginning I used to say to him that I would go to the police and he would say to me if I go to the police . . . I will go and tell them you did it. You did it with your relatives.’

Asked why she kept her suspicions silent for so long about what had happened to the second of their four children, she said: ‘The reason was Mehmet.’

Mrs Goren was arrested in March 1999, first on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and then for murder but the case never went to court. Since then, the case has been reopened and she has agreed to give evidence.

She told the court: ‘I gave wrong information to the police until they arrested me.

‘They came to me, they insisted “what did you do to Tulay? Did you do it?” And then I couldn’t take it any more and I told the truth to the police clearly then.’

The schoolgirl’s father is alleged to have killed her after consulting with his brothers, Cuma and Ali.

After Tulay went missing he told his wife they must disown her. ‘When Mehmet was in the house Tulay’s name was not mentioned in there,’ said Mrs Goren.

‘Tulay’s name should not be mentioned at all, Mehmet was saying.

‘Everything that belonged to Tulay was torn, her clothes, even her Turkish identity card was torn. There will not be anything left inside belonging to Tulay.’

Jonathan Laidlaw QC, for the prosecution, asked: ‘Did you ever ask Mehmet whether he had anything to do with Tulay’s disappearance?’

Mrs Goren replied: ‘I kept saying it to his face openly.

‘I was saying to him: you swallowed Tulay. I was saying she is alive in your tummy. ‘I kept saying it. During the last few years I started saying it more.’

Mrs Goren has previously told the court how her husband bound Tulay’s hands and feet so tightly together the night before she disappeared that her feet turned ‘purple and black’.

She also said her husband told Tulay’s young brother Tuncay to kiss the teenager goodbye one last time hours before she vanished.

Mehmet, 49, of Woodford Green, north-east London, together with Cuma Goren, 42, of Walthamstow, east London, and Ali Goren, 56, of Walthamstow, deny murdering Tulay on January 7, 1999.

They also deny conspiracy to murder her boyfriend Halil Unal between May 1998 and February 1999. The case continues.
