Russia’s New Friend…….

Somalia to recognise South Ossetia and Abkhazia. This has to be related to the problem Somalia is having -and for the rest of the world that plies the waters along the Somali coast- with gangs of pirates operating from its shores, that have effectively blockaded the Somali government. Nothing can move in or out of Somalia without these pirates taking their pound of flesh.

Russia Today: Somalia will recognise the sovereignty of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in the neart future. Somalia’s ambassador to Russia, Mohammed Khandule, says his government fully supports the right of both republics to self-determination.

South Ossetia and Abkhazia have so far been recognised by Russia and Nicaragua.

Meanwhile, Somalia’s President Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed has given his permission for Russia’s armed forces to combat pirates at sea and on land. The move comes after a Ukrainian vessel was hijacked off the African coast last week.“The special status granted to the Russian warships in Somalia means that they will be able to be present in our territorial waters completely legally and they’ll be able to carry out special orders,” Khandule commented.“It’s quite close to the status of a military base, like those we had in the past,” he added.

Somalia is very small potatoes on the international stage -an understatement for sure- and their recognition of the Georgian areas recently poached by Russia, carries very little weight. Russia’s “coalition of the willing” is as amusing to see, since since the Ruskies (and Old Europe) poked fun at the US led coalition that took on Saddam’s Iraq. But what a rag-tag following the Russians have managed to win over to its side. It speaks legions. KGS
