Arabs in Gaza: Life Was Better Under Israeli Occupation…….

The next time you hear or see someone whining about “occupation”, please refer them to this. Life was indeed better for most of the Arabs (the ones who just want to get on with life) while Israel was in control. Now that the Arabs have Hamas and Fattah to rule over them….a new affection for Israeli rule has “cropped up”. KGS

MAWASSI, Gaza – Three years have passed since Israel withdrew from the Gaza Strip, and in that time the economy of this coastal territory of 1.4 million people has gone from bad to worse.

Gas and food shortages are now being compounded by cash shortages as tens of thousands of people were unable to withdraw money from banks on Monday. Still, despite their economic hardships, most Gazans insist that they prefer life here without the Israelis.

But in Mawassi – a mixed ethnic Palestinian and Bedouin town that was completely isolated from the rest of Gaza inside a Jewish settlement enclave – it’s a different story.

“I want [the Israelis] to come back,” says Riyad al-Laham, an unemployed father of eight who worked in the area’s Jewish settlements for nearly 20 years. “All the Mawassi people used to work in the settlements and make good money. Now there is nothing to do. Even our own agricultural land is barren.

  1. When a nation gets its main income from natural resources such as minerals and raw materials (or western aid) the government seems not to pay attention to people’s well-being. Only nations, like Israel or Finland, whose finance is based on taxation of a working man, shows interest on civil rights and freedom.

You know the old Finnish farmers noticed centuries ago; don’t kill a milking cow. I guess in America you would say “the goose that laid the golden egg”.

  2. The Arabs in the territories of the British Mandate have always acted counter to their own interests. The only time since the Mandate ended when their lives improved was the time between 1967, when the Israelis found themselves in control of the disputed territories, and the outbreak of the intifada in the late 1980’s. The institution of the Palestinian Authority has been a disaster for the Palestinian Arabs.

  3. Thanks for stopping by Mathguy…I agree with your perspective.
