Britain: Mohammed Overtakes Oliver And Becomes Second Most Popular Boy’s Name…….

This result comes from a religious group that makes up only 3% of Britain’s population. Earlier this year, Mohamed overtook the traditional Finnish name Timo as a popular boys name.

“For the last 13 years Jack has been the most popular boys’ name in the land. But in multicultural Britain children named after the Muslim prophet Mohammed come a close second. In a reflection of the increasing influence of Islam, figures released yesterday showed the most popular spelling of the name – Mohammed – had climbed five places to 17th in the annual list of top baby names. However, when the seven other spellings of the name are taken into account, the total comes to 6,347 babies, making it the second most popular name of the year – up from 5,936 last year.”

Traditional British names take a licking, while the multicultural clock keeps on ticking. More here. *L* KGS

  1. as you point out, Muslims make up a minority in the UK. Mohammed is becoming ‘most popular’ around Europe, not only because Muslims have more kids, but because they have a very short traditional name list. Most Muslim kids probably share the same five names among them. Europeans, on the other hand, are movie more and more towards naming their children with individulized or trendy names.

  2. If I remember right, muslims tend to name the first born son Mohammed.
