UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Louise Arbour (seated right in a scarf), embodies the same level of detachment from reality as the council she heads. Why she would even bother to give any measure of credibility to the anti-human rights conference gathered in Tehran with her presence…is beyond me.
But wait…there is that notion of “dialogue” being the cure all for every international and regional dissagreement and crisis. The UN’s IAEA has been in “dialogue” with the Iranians for years concerning their plans to develope nuclear weapons, and it has worked for Iran wonderfully well.
“TEHRAN: President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad said on Sunday Iran had reached a key goal in its atomic drive by putting into operation more than 3,000 uranium-enriching centrifuges in defiance of world powers. His typically defiant announcement came as Iran steps up cooperation with the UN atomic agency to answer questions about its atomic drive, in a move expected to stave off further sanctions for several months.
“They thought that by issuing any resolution Iran would back down,” Ahmadinejad told Islamist students, referring to the two sanctions resolutions imposed against Tehran by the UN. “But after each resolution the Iranian nation took another step along the path of nuclear development,” he said, according to the website of state broadcasting.”
Anne Bayefsky takes notice of a few of the more “interesting” utterances in the NAM sponsored anti-human rights get-together, …chaired by Cuba. Here is one made by the UNHRC Commissioner herself:
Louise Arbour: “The new method of considering issues related to human rights is comprehensive and not selective and the UN Human Rights Council is ready to present technical and consultation assistance to Iran.”
Anne Bayefsky: “Non-selective” is UN code for refusing to name states that violate human rights, let alone taking action to stop them. “Technical assistance” is UN code for helping the state avoid criticism by pretending the problem is some kind of infrastructure glitch. It has been clear for some time that the new UN Human Rights Council is bent on eliminating all country-specific criticism, (not directed at Israel of course). Now, apparently, Arbour agrees.”
Truth be told, the NAM’s “Human Rights and Cultural Diversity” scam, is nothing more than a call for an international rejection of western modern notions of morality and common decency. That the UNHRC and its chairman appear to be “on the same plate” with these anti-democratic, anti-human rights jack asses,…is worrisome indeed . *L* KGS
