Moderate Lebanese Shi’ia Cleric Supports Peace Over Violence…….

I believe it to be not only correct, but fair, to publicize Muslim moderation when it comes to my attention. Muslim advocates for rational dialogue, especially those who are community leaders need to be given a front page when ever the opportunity presents itself.

Michael Totten interviews a moderate Shi’ia cleric, Sayyed Mohammad Ali El Husseini, who states:

“I am against the wars and the violence because of my faith. Any violence, any terrorism.” “I hope that my voice will be heard in the world,” “to separate between the two lines, the devil line, the killing line, the bad thoughts, terrorism, and the peaceful line, peace and love, living in dignity, all of that.”

As I have often stated on this blog, as well as in other forums, Islam has the capacity to become whatever the followers of that religion decide, and it will be decided within Islam itself. It is with great risk to himself, that SayyedHusseini preaches such a message, and it’s in the best interest of everyone, Muslim and non-Muslim, that his brand of Islam transplants the version propagated by the Wahhabi/Salafi jihadist.

It’s a sad state of affairs for the West, in which “main stream” branches of Islamic institutions have Islamist radicals within their ranks, preaching messages (of hate) that run contrary to the preaching and practices (of peace and tolerance built on respect for the other) of the lone Lebanese cleric, Sayyid Husseini.

There is a strong argument to be made for the reforming of the Islamic religion, and leaders such as Husseini, need as much support and attention by the international community and the media in order for him and other like minded individuals to succeed. As for Muslims in the West, the brunt of the burden for the reformation of Islam lies squarely on their shoulders. Instead of whining for special rights (that are denied to other groups), they need to be distancing themselves from the problematic teachings of their prophet, as well as in their hadiths and sunna, while championing respect and tolerance for others.

A repeated message denouncing sharia by Islamic leaders in the West, would be a welcome sign. *L* kgs
