Syrian Promises Are Empty…….

Syrian promises to enforce an arms embargo on the Hizbullah are proven to have been disingenuous from the very moment they were given. According to the commander of the UN peacekeeping force, Maj.-Gen. Alain Pellegrini:

“last week a Syrian weapons convoy on its way to Hizbullah was intercepted by the Lebanese army near the Lebanese-Syrian border.”

First, Syria was upset over the possibility of Unifil troops manning the Lebanese border with Syria, saying that they would interpret it as a “hostile move” and stop traffic completely if the plan was put into place. After some major back pedaling from the UN, Sec-Gen Kofi Annan receives assurances from Assad while visiting the Syrian capital, that Syria will:

“take all necessary measures” to implement paragraph 15 of U.N. Security Council resolution 1701.”

He lied. Like any dictatorial potentate, you can be certain that “eloquent assurances will be followed by stark betrayals”. But that didn’t stop Finland’s Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja from putting a positive spin on the assurances given by Syrian Foreign Minister, Walid Al-Moallem during his visit to Finland on 23 August. Tuomioja:

“Syria is an important neighbour to Lebanon and Israel, with the capability of becoming a part of the problem or its solution. The Syrian Foreign Minister himself wanted to emphasise that Syria wants to be a part of the solution, which was positive news”.

To be fair, he did say that Syria’s promises will be monitored, perhaps this latest development should serve as a wake up call. Just because Israel voices concern over Syrian promises, doesn’t autamtically mean that the Syrians can be trusted. KGS
