Kind of ruins the meme of a “concentration camp”.

The shops are full, the diners are packed, the roads choked with new cars and designer jeans plod the sidewalks of Gaza. Of course, all are kept in check by black beards carrying ak 47’s.

Gaza Strip’s middle class enjoys spin classes, fine dining, private beaches
The other side of Gaza

View Photos A year after the war, the small middle class here has created a niche market for rooftop dining, day spas and a beach resort.
By William Booth August 23

GAZA CITY — Alongside the Hamas training camps and bombed-out neighborhoods, there is a parallel reality where the wafer-thin Palestinian middle class here is wooed by massage therapists, spin classes and private beach resorts.

Media images beamed from the Gaza Strip rightly focus on the territory’s abundant miseries. But rising from the rubble of last summer’s devastating war with Israel are a handful of new luxury-car dealerships, boutiques selling designer jeans and, coming soon to a hip downtown restaurant, “Sushi Nights.”

Turkey is set to build a 20,000-seat stadium to international standards in the Gaza Strip to support sports in Palestine, officials revealed on July 14.

A member of the Higher Council of Youth and Sports in the Gaza Strip, Abd al-Salam Haniyeh, said the Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TİKA) would build the stadium.

“The approval for the stadium’s construction by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is one of the best contributions Turkey has provided to Palestinian sports,” he said.

Haniyeh added the stadium would be named Erdoğan Stadium.

Earlier on July 12, TİKA organized an iftar for 700 Palestinian athletes and donated $225,000 to Palestinian sports institutes, Haniyeh said.

According to data provided by the Palestinian Sports Ministry, a total of 30 sports facilities were destroyed and 32 athletes were killed in the Israeli offensive in Gaza last summer.

The six Swedes sitting in an Israeli prison, after Ship to Gaza’s boat was commandeered by Israeli military, are going to be released and sent back to Sweden this weekend.

Early Monday morning the Israeli military boarded the ship illegally (TT: Not illegal, but in accordance with international law) in international waters and brought it to Israel, something the Swedish Foreign Ministry has protested.

The Ship to Gaza was on its way to bring medical supplies and solar panels to the Gaza Strip, which is under blockade by Israel.

According to Gaza’s Israeli lawyer Lymor Goldstein, the Swedes will be deported two at a time on three different flights on Sunday and Monday.

NOTE: As soon as the ships left national waters with the full intention of running a legal blockade known, they can be intercepted and escorted to an Israeli harbor for inspection and impounding. That’s a fact. The Sweddish state news service is spreading false information.

Israel has always been on the front line fighting the jihad, now the Islamic State has finally set its sights on the Jewish state.

Islamic State Claims Responsibility for Rocket Fire on Israel

Israel retaliated “proportionately.”

A radical Islamist group claiming ties with the Islamic State (ISIS) announced responsibility for three rocket attacks on southern Israel late Wednesday.

The IDF immediately retaliated with attacks on three terror sites. No one was injured in the rocket strikes on Israel and in the retaliatory aerial raids.

The “Omar Brigades,” a Salafist cell identified with ISIS, issued a statement calling for a holy war against Israel and added:

We are continuing a jihad against the Jews, the enemies of God. No one can stop us.

So far, Hamas cannot stop them and neither can Israel.

The IDF issued its usual statement after rocket attacks, promising Israelis:

The IDF will act against the aggression, will act against those  that wish to terrorize Israel and will act to protect Israelis in the line of indiscriminate Gaza rocket fire.

ISIS Supporters in Gaza Claim They Launched Rocket on Israel

Hamas finally has found an enemy it fears.
The ISIS Gaza battallon.
The ISIS Gaza battallon.

Islamic State (ISIS) supporters have claimed responsibility for the Grad rocket attack north of Be’er Sheva last week and have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to Hamas to halt its crackdown against them.

The Islamic Jihad originally said it was behind the missile attack, the first beyond the Gaza Belt area since the war against Hamas last summer.

It is not known if the ISIS cells in Gaza are directly linked to the parent organization, but the fact that they have claimed responsibility for the rocket attack indicates they are active are staging a propaganda campaign to attract more recruits.

They have not said what they will do if Hamas does not “withdraw the attacks” against them” in two days, but Hamas clearly is worried.

It has set up checkpoints within Gaza City the past month following several explosions that have been attributed to ISIS cells.

Jihadists blame Hamas for being “soft” on Israel and for not imposing Islamic law on Gaza.

Israel defense minister: Islamic Jihad behind Gaza flare-up

JERUSALEM (AP) — Israel’s defense minister is blaming Islamic Jihad — a smaller Palestinian militant group in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip — for the latest rocket fired at Israel that drew retaliatory airstrikes overnight.

Moshe Yaalon says the airstrikes targeted both Islamic Jihad and Hamas sites in Gaza early on Wednesday, after Islamic Jihad fired a rocket toward southern Israel late on Tuesday night.

There was no immediate comment from Gaza and no Palestinian group claimed responsibility for the attack. The military says it carried out four airstrikes, with no casualties reported.

Israel holds Hamas responsible for any attacks from Gaza.

Yaalon also warned that Israel would respond more forcefully if Hamas did not act to prevent such “provocations.”

Get this, 30 of the wounded are women and children, ….at a jihadi training camp.

Then the Left tries to blame Israel exclusively for the death of women and children when Israel is forced to act against the jihadi enclave for launching war crime rockets and terrorist infiltrations into Israel. They really couldn’t care less about putting their own in harms way.

Blast in Gaza ‘Training Camp’ Wounds at Least 50

Explosion (illustrative)

At least 50 wounded in a blast in a training camp used by Hamas’s “military wing”.

At least 50 Palestinian Arabs were wounded in a blast that occurred Thursday inside a training camp for terrorists in Gaza, Hamas officials, medics and witnesses said, according to AFP.

“An explosion happened inside a post of the resistance in Beit Lahya,” said interior ministry spokesman Iyad al-Bozum, in reference to the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas’s so-called “military wing”.

The health ministry spokesman in Gaza, Ashraf al-Qudra, said the blast wounded 50 people, five of them in a serious condition, and including children.

Witnesses said the blast took place inside a training camp of the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades in northern Gaza, where Hamas is the de factopower.

A doctor in the enclave, Baker Abu Safia of Al-Awda Hospital, said 30 wounded people were brought to his establishment, most of them women and children.

He said the hospital “declared a state of emergency” after the explosion took place.

The cause of the explosion is not yet known nor is it known who is behind it, but it comes one week after  a Salafist group in Gaza that is affiliated with ISIS threatened to kill Hamas members “one by one” in retaliation for the arrests of its members.

I’m sure the customers don’t mind moving to some other table when they toss off homosexuals or Fattah officials.

Heh, the stupid media don’t even realize that by publicizing this well known feature available throughout Gaza, it rips the rug away from underneath the feet of those who claim Gaza is a prison camp under siege.

NOTE: Also, this is a good example of how the Hamas uses it’s people as human shields.

An Israeli intelligence officer told him that Hamas maintained a communications antenna on the roof of the building and that he had several hours to take it down.
“I told them I cannot take it down without permission from the Hamas Interior Ministry,” he explained. Knowing what lay ahead, he rushed home to avoid the likely Israeli attack. The next day, Israeli tank shells hit the upper floors of the building. Level Up’s kitchen was severely damaged.

Rooftop restaurant provides rare bright spot in Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — When nightfall descends upon Gaza, the glittering lights of the Level Up restaurant seem to be the only bright spot in this darkened city.

In a territory plagued by chronic power outages, poverty and shortages of construction materials, the restaurant defies all the rules: It’s well lit, thanks to a humming generator. The tables are crowded and hard to come by, and it is one of the few places in Gaza to rebound and relax.

“People want to believe that they should live their lives,” said Basil Eleiwa, the manager of the restaurant. “People seem to like this place.”

The story of Level Up is in many ways the story of Gaza. It’s located in a high-rise complex that symbolized the short-lived hopes for prosperity in the crowded seaside territory two decades ago. It has been impacted by the rule of the Hamas militant group, experienced the horrors of war, yet somehow manages to plod along in difficult circumstances.

The restaurant opened just days before last year’s war with Israel broke out on July 8. At first, it suffered only minor damage. But about three weeks into the fighting, owner Mohammed Abu Mathkour says he received a phone call from the Israeli army.

Rocket fired from Gaza lands in Israeli territory; IDF strikes terror site

Terrorists in Gaza fired a rocket at the Sderot area on Thursday evening, ending four months of quiet and triggering air raid sirens in the area. The projectile exploded harmlessly in an open, uninhabited area, the IDF said, adding that security forces were searching for its remnants.

In response, the IDF struck a terror target in northern Gaza to the earlier rocket attack, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit said on Thursday shortly before midnight.

It was not immediately clear which organization launched the attack. The assessment within the army is that a small Gazan terror group, not Hamas, fired the rocket.

Following the incident, the IDF announced that Gazan worshippers will not be able to go to Jerusalem for Friday prayers at al-Aksa Mosque this week.

Yesh Atid MK Haim Jelin, formerly head of the Eshkol Regional Council near Gaza, said that for the residents of the South, Israel’s 67th Independence Day “remains a day of no hope.”

Palestinian Cabinet ministers make rare visit to Gaza on unity mission

Ten months after taking office, Cabinet ministers in a Palestinian unity government are making a rare visit to the Gaza Strip.

The Cabinet ministers, all from the West Bank, are spending the week in Gaza in hopes of wresting more control from the Islamic Hamas movement.

Hamas took control of Gaza from the forces of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in 2007. Abbas has governed in parts of the West Bank since then.

The rival factions agreed to form an apolitical unity government last year. But the unity effort has faltered, and Hamas remains firmly in control of Gaza.

Widespread violence against Palestinian women in Gaza

by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik

Widespread violence against Palestinian women in Gaza, reports women’s rights center

“The man believes he has bought the woman and paid for her, and therefore she has become his property and must obey his orders… [Palestinian] laws give him the right of ownership, based on the man being the guardian, and he is the one who commands and prohibits.” – Zainab Al-Ghneimi, head of Women’s Legal Counseling Center

by Itamar Marcus and Nan Jacques Zilberdik

Violence against Palestinian women is widespread because of Palestinian laws and Palestinian culture that give men “the right of ownership” over their wives, according to the head of the Women’s Legal Counseling Center, Zainab Al-Ghneimi. Palestinian principles determine that the man “is the one who commands and prohibits,” she says, commenting on statistics of cases of violence reported to the Center of Women’s Affairs in Gaza.

The belief that the man “has bought the woman and paid for her, and therefore she has become his property and must obey his orders,” is, “unfortunately, the culture of the entire society,” said Al-Ghneimi.

Significantly, the statistics from Gaza show that a high percentage of women themselves felt that domestic violence is justified on certain occasions:

“41% of the women agreed that violence was justified if the woman leaves home without notifying her husband, while 74% agreed that violence was justified if she neglected her children.” [Al-Hayat Al-Jadida, March 29, 2015]

However, Al-Ghneimi rejected this justification of violence, saying that a mistaken understanding of Islam “on the part of men and society” is used to justify this male violence. “There is not a single religious [Islamic] text that encourages violence against women,” she argued.  More here.

 NOTE: Not so fast Al-Ghneimi.

Qur’an (4:34)“Men are the maintainers of women because Allah has made some of them to excel others and because they spend out of their property; the good women are therefore obedient, guarding the unseen as Allah has guarded; and (as to) those on whose part you fear desertion, admonish them, and leave them alone in the sleeping-places and beat them; then if they obey you, do not seek a way against them; surely Allah is High, Great.”

Qur’an (38:44)“And take in your hand a green branch and beat her with it, and do not break your oath…”  Allah telling Job to beat his wife (Tafsir).

From the Hadith:

Bukhari (72:715) – A woman came to Muhammad and begged her to stop her husband from beating her.  Her skin was bruised so badly that she it is described as being “greener” than the green veil she was wearing.  Muhammad did not admonish her husband, but instead ordered her to return to him and submit to his sexual desires.

Bukhari (72:715)“Aisha said, ‘I have not seen any woman suffering as much as the believing women‘”  This is Muhammad’s own wife complaining of the abuse that the women of her religions suffer relative to other women.

Muslim (4:2127) – Muhammad struck his favorite wife, Aisha, in the chest one evening when she left the house without his permission.  Aisha narrates, “He struck me on the chest which caused me pain.”

Muslim (9:3506) – Muhammad’s father-in-laws (Abu Bakr and Umar) amused him byslapping his wives (Aisha and Hafsa) for annoying him.  According to the Hadith, the prophet of Islam laughed upon hearing this.

Abu Dawud (2141)“Iyas bin ‘Abd Allah bin Abi Dhubab reported the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) as saying: Do not beat Allah’s handmaidens, but when ‘Umar came to the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) and said: Women have become emboldened towards their husbands, he (the Prophet) gave permission to beat them.  At first, Muhammad forbade men from beating their wives, but he rescinded this once it was reported that women were becoming emboldened toward their husbands.  Beatings are sometimes necessary to keep women in their place.

Abu Dawud (2142)“The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: A man will not be asked as to why he beat his wife.”

Gaza women take up arms for next Israel war

Hadifa sold all her engagement jewellery to buy the battered AK-47 that she lovingly cradled as she talked about preparing for “part two” of the war with Israel. Her fiancé didn’t mind the extravagant purchase, she said, giggling: he is her battalion commander.

A 26-year-old student from Gaza City, Hadifa wears the black niqab and monochrome bandana of her battalion, the Nasser Salahuddin Brigades. She is part of a growing movement of female fighters in the conflict-ridden territory.

The 51-day war with Israel last year, which claimed the lives of 2,100 Palestinians, 66 Israeli soldiers and seven civilians in Israel, was not yet over, she said, and fighting would break out again “any day” now that the Israeli elections were over.

“No proper ceasefire has been agreed, Gaza has not been rebuilt. We are prepared for fresh fighting to get our freedom,” Hadifa said.

With the re-election of Binyamin Netanyahu, Israel’s hawkish prime minister, both male and female fighters in the area are steeling themselves for more hostilities.

The increased presence of Israeli warplanes over the 32-mile-long territory, and new movement of Israeli soldiers at the eastern borders two weeks ago, sent many of the male militants into their underground bunkers. All bases were temporarily evacuated and daytime training sessions put on hold amid fears of fresh airstrikes.

A temporary truce is in effect, but negotiations for a long-term ceasefire have ground to a halt. The Palestinians are looking for a seaport, an airport and an easing of the eight-year Israeli blockade, while Israel wants the complete disarmament of Gaza. Hamas recently dismissed a possible five-year peace deal, claiming that not enough of their demands had been met.

Palestinian women fighters have been active since the second intifada in 2000, but their numbers have swelled since the most recent Israeli offensive. All of Gaza’s fighting groups have female units, but the most efficient is the Nasser Salahuddin Brigades unit.

“There are more women than ever — we are now almost equal to the number of men. After this war we saw a huge increase of women signing up for the next fight,” said Om Adam, 40, a leathery-faced veteran fighter, and wife of a senior Salahuddin commander.

She said there were several hundred female fighters in Gaza, but no one knew the exact number because each unit worked in a secretive, 25-strong, cell-like structure. She agreed to meet The Times only after nightfall.

The women know only their comrades in their unit. Each cell is led by a female commander, who is assigned a male superior. The Salahuddin Brigade is thought to have at least 80 female combatants and hundreds of others who work in support roles.

Om Adam said that the women fighters had become increasingly important because they could move more freely, passing on weapons, food and information to the men, who might spend weeks almost entirely underground in Gaza’s intricate network of tunnels. “We act as the eyes and ears on the ground for the fighters, checking the streets before they move.”

Some were engaged in direct combat, said Om Khadija, 24, a female fighter who manned an RPG and several rocket launchers during the two months of fighting last summer. All the women recruits were trained to use and fix weapons, including sniper rifles, AK-47s, RPGs and M16s.

But Islam is so ‘progressive’!

Polygamy is widely practiced in Gaza—and the women (or “sister wives”) are not happy about it.

So says Asmaa Al-Ghoul, who has just exposed this practice in an article for Al Monitor. Al-Ghoul is a heroic feminist Palestinian journalist who, in 2009, was fired for her work in which she exposed honor killings on the West Bank and in Gaza; she was harassed, threatened, and nearly arrested by Hamas for this work. I interviewed her at the time by phone and published a series of articles about her.

Now, she reports that polygamy is practiced by both rich and poor in Gaza. Anecdotally, she describes “hostility” and “hatred” between a pair of “sister-wives” who visited a beauty parlor together. She also quotes a financially independent and professionally successful woman who chose to become a second wife but who now says:

Becoming the second wife is the worst decision that a woman can make. She will always live with the guilt of taking what was not hers. In most instances, the second wife discovers that 90% of the things her husband told her about his circumstances and his first wife were lies.

Another woman, a first wife, describes the enormous “pain and humiliation” that she felt when her husband sprang a second wife upon her.

Gazans feel trapped, six months after Israel-Hamas war

Half a year has passed since the end of the war in the Gaza Strip. With reconstruction moving slowly and borders mostly closed, hopelessness is spreading among those living in the ruins. Tania Krämer reports from Gaza.

An adult and child stand with their backs towards the camera, facing a pile of rubble in Gaza (Photo: Tania Krämer, DW)

His suitcases are packed and ready to be collected. Mohammed Sulaiman has only one thought these days: how to get out of Gaza. The 25-year old has received a scholarship to pursue a doctorate at an Australian university.

“I feel trapped. I have tried everything, through connections, through all means to get out of Gaza,” he says, seated in a coffee shop in Gaza City. “Last time the Rafah border crossing opened for three days, I went there with my pregnant wife, and we tried to get on one of the buses. But I can’t even register.”

Sulaiman is one of many who feel trapped in Gaza. For years now, Gazans have been unable to decide for themselves whether they can leave the small coastal enclave, even if just for travel. But since the 52-day war between Hamas and Israel last summer, the sense of being stuck in Gaza has become even stronger, Sulaiman explains.

In 2012 he was able to spend a year studying English in London and returned to Gaza afterwards. “I used to think I can make change here, but I lost hope. I don’t think I’ll ever come back if I were able to leave again. There is simply no future in this place,” he says.

Egypt to begin expanding Gaza buffer zone next week

A Palestinian man drives on the border between Egypt and the southern Gaza Strip Sept. 3, 2013. (File photo: Reuters)

Egypt said Tuesday work will begin next week to double the width of a buffer zone being built along the border with the Gaza Strip to prevent militants infiltrating from the Palestinian enclave.

A 500-metre  wide buffer zone is now being built along some 10 kilometers of the border, with some 800 homes being demolished in the process.

Work will begin next week to expand it by another 500 meters, North Sinai provincial Governor Abdel Fattah Harhur said.

Harhur told AFP he had met families from the area to be evacuated and told them they needed to inform authorities of the border city of Rafah whether they want financial compensation or alternative housing.

Construction of the buffer zone comes in the wake of an October 24 suicide bombing that killed 30 Egyptian soldiers and wounded scores more.

It’s an amazing thing how Muslims always finds someone, or some other group, not as radical and violent as themselves, and set themselves to correct the situation.

Just remind yourself that Hamas throws its opposition from tall buildings (a traditional koranic punishment reserved for homosexuals) drags its freshly executed through its streets, indoctrinates its youth with Islam 101 and with hopes of killing Jews, exacts jizya from its Christians and sets its society on a perpetual course of wanting nothing else but the destruction of the Jewish state of Israel, and yet IS challenges their Islamonazi street cred.

ISIS in Gaza

When One Radical Group Believes Another Is Not Radical Enough

by Khaled Abu Toameh  •  December 5, 2014 at 5:00 am

Now almost everyone is talking about the Islamic State threats in Gaza against poets, writers and women. The leaflets mention the poets and writers by name — a move that has created panic. The leaflets also include an ultimatum to Palestinian women to abide by Islamic attire or face the Islamic State style of punishment — presumably being stoned to death.

Of course, all this is taking place while Hamas continues to insist that that the Islamic State is not operating in Gaza. Those who are taking the threats seriously are the writers and women whose names appeared in the leaflets.

Islamic State flags can already be seen at football stadiums, on windshields of vehicles, mosques, educational centers and wedding invitations.

It is also clear that if and when the Hamas regime collapses, the Gaza Strip will not fall into the lands of the less-radical Palestinians.

It is important to keep in mind that the counties in Europe now voting for a Palestinian state may effectively be paving the way for a takeover by Islamic State.

It is always dreamlike to see one Islamist terror group accuse the other of being too “lenient” when it comes to enforcing sharia laws. But it is not dreamlike when a terrorist group starts threatening writers and women.

That is what is happening these days in the Gaza Strip, where supporters of the Islamic State are accusing Hamas of failing to impose strict Islamic laws on the Palestinian population — as if Hamas has thus far endorsed a liberal and open-minded approach toward those who violate sharia laws.

Until this week, the only topic Palestinians in the Gaza Strip were talking about was how to rebuild homes and buildings that were destroyed during the last war between Hamas and Israel.

Now, however, almost everyone is talking about the Islamic State threats against poets, writers and women.

Gaza rocket lands in Strip after sirens sound in southern Israel

A rocket launched on Friday morning failed to cross into Israeli territory and landed in the Strip, an army spokeswoman said.

The launch set off sirens in the Eshkol Regional Council – the same region where a rocket hit last week, violating an August-26 cease-fire for the second time.

Israel and Hamas reached a deal three months ago to end seven weeks of fighting, a truce which has largely held.

On November 1st and September 16th shells fired from Gaza hit Israel near the southern border, causing no injuries or damage and prompting no Israeli retaliation.

Egyptian-mediated cease-fire talks, which were scheduled to resume in Cairo last month, have been put on hold amid an uptick in terrorism across northern Sinai.
