Terror in Egypt: Jihadi gunmen waving black flag of ISIS are shot dead before they could detonate suicide vest after storming hotel and opening fire on European tourists in Red Sea resort

Egypt gunmen waving ISIS flag shot dead before they could detonate suicide vest

WARNING – GRAPHIC CONTENT: Two jihadis armed with a gun, a knife and a suicide belt attacked a hotel in the Egyptian Red Sea resort town of Hurghada on Friday, wounding three European tourists, security sources said. The attackers arrived by sea to launch the onslaught on the beachside Bella Vista Hotel (pictured left), but that security forces had killed the attacker wearing the suicide bomb (pictured centre).

Pictures have also emerged of the black and white ISIS flag (right), reportedly in the hotel lobby as well as the suicide belt. The attack has not yet been claimed, although ISIS said on Friday that an attack on Israeli tourists in Cairo yesterday had been carried out by its fighters, in response to a call by the group’s leader, Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, to target Jews ‘everywhere’.

Gates of Vienna’s take here.

What President el-Sisi is telling them is contrary to the “consensus of the scholars”, that is, to more than a thousand years of universally accepted Islamic principle and praxis.

What he is calling for is, in effect, the rewriting of the basis of Islamic law. And his words are being spoken in the heart of Islamic scholarship and jurisprudence. It’s a remarkable moment”

NOTE: How far he gets is something altogether different. The Islamosantas (at least some of them) might be clapping now, but what they do later might indicate the future of El-Sisi’s agenda. Islamic history is littered with similar attempts only to be dashed upon the rocks.

A top Islamic State operative of the group suspected of bombing the Russian jet over Egypt has been killed by police in Cairo.

Egypt’s interior ministry said Ashraf Ali Ali Hassanein al-Gharabli was shot dead in an exchange of fire after police tried to arrest him.

Hassanein was one of the most sought after militants in the country and had featured in a wanted notice by police in January 2014, months into a militant insurgency centred in the Sinai Peninsula.

He was implicated in a string of attacks including the bombing of the Italian consulate in Cairo last July and the murders of a Croat and an American.

A police official said he had been the right-hand man of Hisham al-Eshmawi, a feared former commando who is believed to have spearheaded a string of bombings and assassinations in the capital for the militant Ansar Beit al-Maqdis group, now known as Sinai Province.

At least a dozen tourists and their guides have been killed in what is reported to be an accidental attack on their convoy by Egyptian security forces.

Some of the tourists are reported to be Mexican and as many as 10 other passengers in a convoy of four cars are said to have been injured.

A statement from Egyptian interior ministry said while police and armed forces were pursuing “terrorist elements” they had accidentally engaged with a tourist convoy.

The ministry statement claimed the tourists should not have been in that area and their presence there was “illegal”.

“A joint force from the police and military, whilst chasing terrorist elements in the oasis area of the Western desert tonight, accidentally engaged four four-wheel drives belonging to a Mexican tourist group,” the ministry said.

Report: Ousted Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi refusing prison food he calls unsafe

Establishments should in fact maintain the right to ban certain kinds of clothing or lack thereof.

I Was Banned From Entering A Restaurant in Egypt Because Of My Veil

Women wearing the head-scarf are refused entry at most bars and night clubs in Egypt

Riverside, a restaurant and bar in Cairo’s upscale district of Zamalek, has joined a string of bars, clubs and restaurants in Egypt that have discriminated against customers based on the veil or their social status.

The following is courtesy of Dr. Heba Hamed Arnaout, a well respected professor of microbiology in her 50s, who visited Riverside with her husband and two foreign friends only to be rejected because of her head scarf:

“Last night my husband and I were invited by our dear American friend and his lovely German wife to enjoy together the songs of a famous Jazz singer and his band in Riverside in Zamalek.

The first words said to us by the receptionist was that I was not allowed in because I’m veiled and that they serve drinks and there is live music and dancing. It was very embarrassing in front of my friends to be banned from entering anywhere in my own country because of my chosen attire (the veil).

When I told the female receptionist that it should be MY choice whether I want to go in or not, she turned her back and went inside to call her boss to deal with this critical situation”.

The manager was polite and claimed that their policy was carried out all over the world and in similar places. My answer was that I was never before stopped from entering any similar place in Europe (where alcohol is by default) or any night club or restaurant in Egypt where again alcoholic drinks are served.

Egyptians lambast ‘ugly’ new Nefertiti statue

The unveiling of an ugly copy of a famously beautiful bust of Queen Nefertiti caused Egyptians to mock the authorities as well as the current state of art in the country.

Queen Nefertiti ruled Egypt alongside her husband in the 14th century BCE, and her beauty is legendary – her name in fact translates as “a beautiful woman has arrived.” Our modern picture of the ancient queen has been largely shaped by a bust unearthed in 1912 which currently sits in a museum in Berlin – its ownership is the subject of frequent debate between Egypt and Germany.

To Egyptians, Nefertiti remains a proud symbol of their country’s impressive history and beauty. So when the authorities wanted to commission a statue at the entrance of the city of Samalut, they thought of the ancient queen.

Unfortunately, the replica that resulted bore so little resemblance to the legendary beauty that many began to despair for the state of Egyptian art. In simple terms, it was just plain ugly.

“This is an insult to Nefertiti and to every Egyptian,” tweeted one Egyptian woman. Another wrote: “It should be named ‘ugly tasteless artless statue’… not Nefertiti.”

Because in Islam 101 (the basic fundamental Islam that mohamed spread) nothing un-islamic that existed before, can exist now.

Like him or not, at least Mubarak had no intention of destroying one of the cash cows plying money into the Egyptian state.

ISIS “caliph” Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi told followers of his terror group that destroying Egypt’s national monuments, such as the pyramids and the sphinx, is a “religious duty” that must be carried out by those who worship Islam, as idolatry is strictly banned in the religion, according to reports.

UK radical Islamist Anjem Choudary echoed Baghdadi’s sentiments, telling The Telegraph: “When Egypt comes under the auspices of the Khalifa [Caliphate], there will be no more pyramids, no more Sphinx, no more idolatry,” saying that the ancient statues’s destruction “will be just.”

Another Islamist preacher, Ibrahim Al Kandari, agrees that the cultural monuments need to be destroyed to comply with the Shariah.

“The fact that early Muslims who were among prophet Mohammed’s followers did not destroy the pharaohs’ monuments upon entering Egypt does not mean that we shouldn’t do it now,” he told Al-Watan.

The jihadi terror threat to Egypt has steadily increased following the fall of its Muslim Brotherhood regime and the installation of President Abdel-Fattah el-Sisi, who has pledged to rid the country of its radical elements.

Muslim Brotherhood calls for ‘rebellion’ after raid in Cairo kills nine

Israel grants Egypt’s requests to reinforce troops in Sinai after a wave of deadly attacks carried out by IS

The Muslim Brotherhood said on Wednesday its leaders killed in a Cairo apartment were murdered in “in cold blood,” calling for a rebellion against President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, who it calls a “butcher.”

Nine Muslim Brotherhood members were killed by Egyptian security forces in Cairo’s October 6 suburb on Wednesday. They were killed in a raid on a home which was allegedly being used as Muslim Brotherhood headquarters, according to security sources.

Khaled Desouki (AFP/File)Khaled Desouki (AFP/File)“People gather at the site of a bomb that targeted the convoy of the Egyptian state prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, in Cairo on June 29, 2015”

The killed include Nasser al-Hafi, a former deputy in the lower house of parliament for the Brotherhood’s Freedom and Justice Party and Brotherhood leader, Abdel-Fattah Mohamed Ibrahim.

“Come out in rebellion and in defense of your country, yourselves and your children,” it said in a statement issued in English Wednesday. “Destroy the citadels of his oppression and tyranny and reclaim Egypt once more.”

It called the killings “a turning point that will have its own repercussions… al-Sisi is initiating a new phase during which it will not be possible to control the anger of the oppressed sectors who will not accept to be killed in their own houses and in the middle of their families.”

It also said the men were “rounded up inside the house and then were murdered in cold blood without any investigations or indictments.”

egypt punks actor idf executing him

Egyptian reality TV show stages shocking mock Israeli execution of Syrian actor

Prominent actor arrested at sea by fake Israeli soldiers, taken in for questioning, and led out to be executed

In a shocking prank conducted for an Egyptian reality TV show, a famous Syrian singer on a pleasure cruise off the Egyptian coast was arrested by fake Israeli naval forces, interrogated at a mock Israeli army base, and led out at gunpoint to be executed.

Egypt’s Al-Hayat TV recently broadcast the elaborate hoax, which is part of a slew of such pranks being screened by a number of TV stations in the Arab world as Ramadan festivities are underway.

The victim of the prank, prominent Syrian actor Bassem Yakhour, was on a pleasure cruise in a yacht at the Sharm el-Sheikh Red Sea resort off the Egyptian coast with a small group of passengers, all of whom were aware of the gag that was about to take place.

A helicopter appears overhead, after which gunshots are heard and two small boats pull up alongside the yacht. The passengers are then told by actors disguised as Israeli soldiers they are under arrest for entering Israeli territorial waters.

Yakhour is then blindfolded and led to land to a fake Israeli army based near the beach, intricately constructed with Hebrew signs, buildings featuring Stars of David, and Hebrew-speaking officers.

The actor is then questioned at gunpoint, during which sounds of screams and dogs barking are clearly audible in the background.

“We were in the Egyptian water,” Yakhour says in English to his captors. “I swear. You kidnapped us. You brought us here.”

He later frantically protests: “I’m not the captain of the ship.”

Is there any doubt as to why Israelis are incredibly sensitive to the securing of their own safety?

muslims mindset

All they need to do to reaffirm the reasons why they are heavily focused on security issues, national defense etc., is to take a look around on the states bordering them. The Muslim Arabs can’t even live among themselves in peace and in prosperity, so there’s little hope of Israel achieving it with them either.

The northern Sinai Peninsula south of the border with Israel is engulfed in an all-out war.

Egyptian F-16 warplanes attacked Islamic State (ISIS) and other jihadists’ positions for several hours Wednesday afternoon and killed more than 90 jihadists following massive ISIS attacks.

Most of the 70 Egyptian casualties were soldiers and policemen, and the death toll is not final.

Egypt retaliated immediately and fiercely, and Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu said:

Terrorism is knocking on our borders. ISIS is not only across from the Golan Heights, it is also in Egypt, across from Rafah…And we are together with Egypt and other states in the Middle East and the world in the struggle against extreme Islamic terror.

Egypt prosecutor Hisham Barakat killed in Cairo attack

Egypt’s public prosecutor, Hisham Barakat, has been killed in a bomb attack on his car in Cairo, officials say.

Mr Barakat died of his wounds in hospital after the bombing in the suburb of Heliopolis, a government spokesman told the BBC.

State media said that at least eight others were also hurt in the attack.

Mr Barakat has referred thousands of Islamists to trial since the overthrow of President Mohammed Morsi in 2013.

‘Car bomb’

Hundreds of Islamists have been sentenced to death or life imprisonment, as part of a crackdown on supporters of the banned Muslim Brotherhood.

Jihadist militants have meanwhile stepped up their attacks on Egypt’s security forces.

Mr Barakat is the most senior figure to have been targeted for assassination since a 2013 attempt on the life of the then-interior minister.

Egypt has begun demolishing the headquarters of the now-dissolved party of former President Hosni Mubarak.

The building in Cairo near Tahrir Square was torched in the 2011 uprising that toppled Mubarak.

Demolition workers also began tearing down a nearby office block that was once the centre of state bureaucracy.

Egypt’s government approved the move in April and said that the land would be given to the neighbouring Egyptian Museum.

Mubarak’s National Democratic Party (NDP) was dissolved in April 2011 and its assets, including its headquarters on the River Nile, were seized.

Islamists warn of backlash over Mohamed Morsi death sentence

Muslim Brotherhood say prison break sentences are act of revenge by Egyptian regime as crackdown intensifies

Egyptian Islamists have warned that the world should brace itself for a backlash after the country’s first freely elected president, the Muslim Brotherhood’s Mohamed Morsi, was given a provisional death sentence nearly two years after he was overthrown by the army following mass protests against his rule.

Morsi was among over 100 men sentenced to death on Saturday for allegedly escaping prison during the 2011 uprising that toppled Morsi’s predecessor, Hosni Mubarak. Morsi and his colleagues were convicted of conspiring with Hamas, the Brotherhood’s Palestinian offshoot, whom judges decided had helped the prisoners leave jail in January 2011.

Erdogan condemns Morsi verdict as return to ‘ancient Egypt’

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Saturday condemned the death sentence handed out by an Egyptian court to former president Mohamed Morsi, saying it recalled “ancient Egypt”.

“The popularly elected president of Egypt, chosen with 52 percent of the vote, has unfortunately been sentenced to death,” Erdogan said at a rally in Istanbul, to howls of protest from the crowd.

“Egypt is turning back into ancient Egypt,” Erdogan said, referring to the old Pharaonic rule of the land that ended over two millennia ago.

“The West, unfortunately, is still turning a blind eye to Sisi’s coup,” he added. Morsi was overthrown in 2013 by army chief Abdel Fattah al-Sisi who is now president after winning elections last year.

“While they (the West) abolished the death penalty in their own countries, they just look on as spectators at this execution in Egypt,” he added.

Turkey, like the EU, has itself abolished the death penalty.

The Islamic-rooted government under Erdogan was a strong supporter of the Islamist Morsi after he won the 2012 elections with just under 52 percent of the vote, hoping he would help restore Turkey’s Ottoman-era influence in the region.

However Turkey reacted furiously to the overthrow by Sisi of Morsi, a move supported by Saudi Arabia. Diplomatic relations were severely degraded.

Egyptian court sentences ousted President Mohammed Morsi to death

An Egyptian court on Saturday sentenced ousted President Mohammed Morsi to death over his part in a mass prison break that took place during the 2011 uprising that toppled Hosni Mubarak.

As is customary in passing capital punishment, Judge Shaaban el-Shami referred his death sentence on Morsi and others to the nation’s top Muslim theologian, or mufti, for his non-binding opinion. He set June 2 for the next hearing.

Morsi, Egypt’s first freely elected president, was ousted by the military in July 2013 following days of mass street protests by Egyptians demanding that he be removed because of his divisive policies.

The ousted leader already is serving a 20-year sentence following his conviction on April 21 on charges linked to the killing of protesters outside a Cairo presidential palace in December 2012.

The Muslim Brotherhood is making a dramatic comeback in Egypt, with an influx of new young members signing up since it was crushed in a military takeover and banned two years ago.

The 87-year-old movement shifted its headquarters to London after thousands of its rank-and-file members, and most of its older leaders, were jailed following the ousting of President Morsi in a coup in 2013. It was designated a terrorist group by the Egyptian authorities and has been blamed for a sharp increase in attacks against the security forces.

In Britain, where it now bases its websites and press office, it might yet be banned or have its activities heavily restricted when a review ordered by David Cameron presents its findings later this month.

However, its younger members say they are expanding the movement back at home. “About 70 per cent of the active members are aged below 30. We have taken most of the leadership positions too,” said Ahmed, a newly elected youth leader in Alexandria, which has one of the most active chapters of the Islamist movement.

Ahmed, a 30-year-old engineer who risks the hangman’s noose for his activities, said a new vision for the organisation had encouraged a wave of recruits. “Now we present the most active opposition against the regime.”

Younger members have taken over key roles within the Guidance Bureau, the secretive decision-making body, he said. The Bureau, which usually has 11 positions, had been dominated by senior members of the Brotherhood’s biggest families and was previously headed by Mohamed Badie, who is now in jail after being given five separate death penalties.

“Before 2013, you couldn’t find a Bureau member under 50 years old,” Ahmed said. The young members want to change the strategic vision of the group to make it more accessible to all political ideologies and parties, he added. They blame the “isolationist” attitude of the older leaders during the year they held the presidency for the group’s fall from power. “We are more open to other ways of thinking.”
