BRUCE BAWER: NOTES ON ‘COUNTERJIHAD’…….

Think of it. If there was going to be such a term, every freedom-loving person in the Western world should’ve been eager to see the word “counterjihadist”  appended to his or her name after 9/11. The attacks on the World Trade Center and Pentagon, after all, were jihadist acts.

bawer notes on counterjihad 29.7.2013

Back in the day, anti-Communists had a similar problem. I’m old enough to recall the obloquy heaped upon them by bien pensant types – professors and high-toned journalists who considered active, vocal opposition to Communism the most lowbrow of pastimes. Yes, whereas today’s counter-counterjihadists act as if jihad is a figment of counterjihadists’ fevered imaginations, the anti-anti-Communists (a label they wore with pride) at least acknowledged – albeit in a bland, bored way – that Communism existed. Sometimes they even admitted that it wasn’t all that terrific. But by focusing their animus on anti-Communism, and remaining all but silent about the evils of Communism itself – indeed, by insisting that the very application of words like “evil” to Communism (à la Ronald Reagan) was infantile and hyberbolic – they drove home the idea that overt anti-Communism was worse – by which they meant less intelligent, less sophisticated, less worldly – than Communism itself. Indeed, even as self-identified Communists in America and throughout the West held positions of trust in the academy, government, the arts, and elsewhere, anti-Communists came to be viewed as fanatical, paranoid conspiracy theorists who, in the phrase of the day, saw “a Communist under every bed.” Even now, the Hollywood Ten, a group of directors and screenwriters who in 1947 were cited for contempt of Congress for refusing to answer questions about their Communist Party affiliations, are considered heroes of American freedom, even though it is a matter of public record that all ten of them turned out, in fact, to be Stalinists, dedicated to destroying American freedom; meanwhile, director Elia Kazan – a former member of the Party who named names” because he recognized Stalinism as a genuine menace to American freedom – is still remembered as a fink.

So it is today with Islam. The “counterjihadists”  are the villains – the hysterics, the fools, who see a Muslim under every bed, with a bomb in his turban. Meanwhile the good guys are the counter-counterjihadists – the journalists, activists, and others who make a career of slamming Islam’s critics, whom they frequently represent (especially over here in Scandinavia) as “conspiracy theorists.” For just as the anti-Communists of yesteryear were viewed not as sober, well-informed students of life behind the Iron Curtain but as obsessive, ignorant haters, we counterjihadists are viewed not as people who’ve read the Koran and studied Islamic societies and subcultures but as semi-literate morons and bigots – and, according to one particularly noxious meme that has spread far and wide in the last couple of years, mindless disciples of what our enemies caricature as the mad ramblings of Bat Ye’or. (Never do any of these mud-slingers ever try to explain why so many writers and scholars around the world – people with a variety of professional and personal backgrounds, and with long records of thinking for themselves and of observing the world with their own eyes – all chose, apparently more or less at once, to become, supposedly, disciples of the same person.) It should be a matter of national shame for Britain that when its government banned Robert Spencer and Pamela Geller from its shores, it was doing the bidding of the counter-counterjihadists of Hope Not Hate – who, despite their manifestly Stalinist methods and sympathies, are treated by U.K. authorities as reliable ideological gatekeepers, even as the truth-telling Spencers and Gellers are tagged as anathema.

HOPE NOT HATE, AN ENEMY OF THE PEOPLE……..

A bunch of buffoonish liars and miscreants.

HOPE NOT HATE IS BRITAINS POWERFUL ENEMY OF FREE SPEECH 8.7.2013

What is Hope Not Hate? Founded in 2004 as a “positive antidote” to the British National Party, it “has the support of the Daily Mirror, trade unions, celebrities and community groups across the country.” I wrote about it here last year, after it issued a particularly odious piece of propaganda and character assassination entitled Counter-Jihad Report.

The “report’s” release was timed to coincide with the trial of Anders Behring Breivik, for its whole point was to link the Norwegian mass murderer with the several dozen people around the world (myself included) who were included in the report’s list of critics of Islam – the idea being that those critics were purveyors of hate, pure and simple, and that Breivik’s killing spree was a natural consequence of their vile rhetoric.

About jihad itself – about 9/11, 7/7, and every other jihadist atrocity of recent decades – the “report” had absolutely nothing to say; on the contrary, the picture it painted was of a bunch of out-and-out hatemongers all of whom, in recent years, had resolved, for perverse reasons of their own (or, perhaps, without any reason at all), to despise and denounce a quarter of the earth’s population. An uninformed reader of the report might easily have concluded that these hatemongers’ common preoccupation – this thing they called jihad – was nothing more than a product of their twisted, feverish minds.

BRUCE BAWER: THE ANTI-ISRAEL PEACE INDUSTRY, A SHAM……..

It’s not by accident that more times than not, anyone/anything associated with ”peace” and ”equality”, especially in connection with the Arabs’ dirty terrorist war against Israel, have little to do with what they say they represent. It’s all a ruse. The notorious Rachel Corrie pictured below is just one prime example.

rachel-corrie-flag-burning

Perusing these friends-of-Palestine websites, one discovers certain phenomena over and over again – among them a staggering naivete and sentimentality, a colossal ignorance of history (or a remarkable determination to block it out), and a reflexive, vicious hatred of Israel and, yes, Jews. On these sites, Palestine often seems less like a real place on the map, a place where real people live out their lives, than some perverse combination of a poverty-and-suffering theme park for idle, affluent Americans, a laboratory in which Peace Studies practitioners can carry out their experiments, and a destination for left-wing Christian pilgrims in search a virtue fix.
On none of the websites I looked at was there so much as the slightest hint of awareness that more than a few Palestinians are in the grip of a self-destructive psychopathology that has been instilled in them by terrorist movements and on which they have brought up their children, almost surely guaranteeing that their people, however much “help” they may receive from all over the Western world, will not develop a normally functioning society or a productive economy in any of our lifetimes, but will continue to be fixated on murder and mayhem.

Exposing the Anti-Israel ‘Peace Industry’

The other day, I went online for what was supposed to be a quick Internet search. Instead I ended up spending a couple of hours meandering from one website to another, led by links and Google hits, increasingly fascinated – and appalled – by what I was seeing. What I was looking at was the websites of organizations – mostly American, and mostly Christian, but also Jewish and Muslim, and also Swedish, Australian, English, Dutch, and so on – that claim to be concerned about the Palestinians and to be working toward a Middle East in which members of every religion can live together in peace and “mutual understanding.”

Some of the organizations, especially the Christian ones, describe themselves and their activities in consistently warm and fuzzy – and, not infrequently, vague – language, focusing on such values as respect and reconciliation, peace and empowerment, hope and healing, freedom and dignity. They seem eager to convey the impression that they have a deep regard for all human beings, including people on both sides of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and an unshakable belief in nonviolence:

Through a commitment to the principles of nonviolence, Holy Land Trust aspires to strengthen and empower the peoples of the Holy Land to engage in spiritual, pragmatic and strategic paths that will end all forms of oppression. We create the space for the healing of the historic wounds in order to transform communities and build a future that makes the Holy Land a global model for understanding, respect, justice, equality and peace.

BRUCE BAWER: THE US IS WORSE ON ISLAM THAN EUROPE……?

I believe that Bruce has a point.

America – Worse Than Europe on Islam?

It seems long ago. When I wrote my 2006 book While Europe Slept, I was confident that America was all but immune to the forces that were bringing Europe down. In the book, I spoke of “a philosophical gulf” between Europe and the U.S. that “sometimes seemed as wide as the Atlantic itself.” It was Europe that had appeased and buckled under to Hitler in the name of peace; it was Americans who had crossed the ocean to crush him in the name of freedom. On some level, Europeans still thought like serfs, viewing the state as their protector; in America, every man was a king, and the government worked for us. Europeans wouldn’t give up their long vacations for anything; Americans didn’t mind putting in long hours in order to get ahead. Europeans, seduced by multiculturalism, thought of themselves and others as members of groups; Americans saw everybody as an individual with inalienable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Europeans cherished their welfare states; Americans, their freedom.

As for Islam, Europe gave its Muslim newcomers everything, asked nothing, and encouraged and even welcomed separatist enclaves in which their so-called “new countrymen” could remain outsiders forever, in return for which the Europeans fully expected a lifetime supply of loving gratitude; the U.S., for its part, believed firmly in integration, for which it had always had a special gift, demanding that newcomers work, obey the law, learn the language, and respect the country’s founding values, and in return genuinely viewed them as authentic Americans – as, indeed, did the newcomers themselves.

As I say, it seems long ago. I’ve long since come to understand that most of those quaint distinctions just don’t hold anymore. Saudi-funded American “experts” on the Middle East and their allies in the American media have spread pretty lies about Islam throughout American society. Some of America’s most influential legal minds argue tirelessly for the acceptance of sharia in American jurisprudence and for the watering down of the First Amendment where speech about Islam is concerned. The State Department is run by people who have been lying to themselves for years about Islam, the Muslim Brotherhood, you name it, and who are eager to come to some accommodation with the Islamic world on the question of what Americans should and should not be allowed to say about the religion of peace. Top-level figures in the U.S. military preferred to treat the Fort Hood jihadist as a psychiatric case. The so-called Department of Homeland Security is in the hands of people all too many of whom would like to pretend, if at all possible, that acts of terror committed on American soil are just ordinary crimes. From Hollywood to Broadway, from the art galleries to the news media, self-censorship about Islam rules the day. In short, America is at least as susceptible as Europe to the steady accumulation of Islamic power.

BRUCE BAWER: NORWAY HAS HAD A BIT OF BAD PUBLICITY OF LATE……….

I’ve published earlier about Norway’s city councilman Khalid Haji Ahmed, here is Bruce Bawer’s take on him.

The Norwegian Labor Party’s Holocaust Fan

November 30, 2012 By Bruce Bawer

If you haven’t noticed, Norway has been undergoing a bit of bad publicity of late apropos of what has been described as its unparalleled levels of anti-Semitism. One of the country’s few highly placed truth-tellers, Hanne Nabintu Herland, a religious scholar at the University of Oslo, recently put it this way: “How could a country that was once a loyal friend of Israel be transformed into a nation with a government that refuses to distance itself from Hamas as a terrorist organization? Norway is the most anti-Semitic country in the West, because of the left-wing elite.” Alan Dershowitz said the same thing here at Front Page last year after a series of unpleasant personal experiences in the land of the fjords: “Norway is the most anti-Semitic and anti-Israel country in Europe today.”

Nor did it do much to rehabilitate Norway’s image when the Royal Palace announced a couple of weeks ago the awarding of a medal to Trond Ali Linstad, a Muslim convert who is also an outspoken anti-Semite. (Fortunately, the public furor over this decision caused the king to change his mind.)

The other day, when I noticed a headline indicating that the Norwegian police were apologizing to the country’s Jewish population, I experienced a fleeting sense of hope. Had at least one important national institution actually realized the error of its recent ways? Then it turned out – and, knowing the country as long as I have, I should have seen this coming – that the police were apologing for having helped the Nazis during the occupation with the job of rounding up Jews and shipping them off to be exterminated. A full news cycle was consumed with conspicuous self-flagellation about this horrible chapter of Norwegian history. The sole still-living Jew to have been handed over to the Germans was interviewed all over the place.

I watched several TV news and debate programs that solemnly addressed the police department’s apology. But on none of them was there so much as a hint that in 2012, the Jews are still the chief victims of prejudice in Norway. No, the message sent out by all the commentators I heard was the usual one: that the enduring lesson of the anti-Semitic crimes of yesteryear is that we should be especially alert nowadays to similar offenses against “other groups.” Everybody knows, of course, which “other group” is meant by this. And nobody needed to spell out the now-familiar formula: that the Jews are today’s Nazis, and the Muslims today’s Jews.

This latest round of hand-wringing over the Holocaust was barely over when a new story made the headlines: the other day a young Yemeni-Norwegian named Khalid Haji Ahmed, who until recently was an official in the Workers’ Youth League (Arbeidernes Ungdomsfylking, or AUF), the junior division of Norway’s Labor Party, and who is currently a member of the city council in the town of Hamar (pop. 29,000), was discovered to have taken part in a Facebook discussion of a status update that read as follows:

“Fucking Jew whores, wish Hitler could come back and shower you a little more.”

Ahmed was apparently one of several AUF members who took part in the discussion and who seemed to take an affirmative position toward their friend’s pro-Holocaust sentiment. Among the comments Ahmed posted was this, in reference to the original status update: “Best of luck eight times over.” (Facebook later deleted the discussion, in response to which the person who had posted the original status update wrote: “It’s probably Jews who run that, too.”)

BRUCE BAWER: THANKFULLY THE FREE THINKING FILM SOCIETY EXISTS……..

The cordon sanitaire the lib movie, media industry and academy has placed upon pro-Israel documentary film makers, is obscene. The reason they do so, is to protect the finely crafted false meme they’ve invented over the past few decades, in which size dictates the justness of the cause.

Israel is perceived as the more powerful of the two, so the Palis get a clean slate and a free pass regardless of the many horrors they commit. These film societies like the Free Thinking Film Society in Ottawa Canada are incredibly important in getting the truth out, and are in need of your support.

Among the films I saw was Israel Inside (2011)When the popular author and Harvard professor Tal Ben-Shahar returned to his native Israel after fourteen years, he found a country that “had not only joined the twenty-first century,” but “was in many ways leading the way.” Israel is second only to the Silicon Valley in IT start-ups. With only eight million people, it has more firms listed on the NASDAQ exchange than any country except for the U.S. (pop. 315 million) and China (1.34 billion).

Why this disproportionate success?  Ben-Shahar provides a convincing answer, listing six factors, or “actualizers.” First, family: “Israel feels like a big, united family,” which breeds interdependence and independence. Second, a knack for turning adversity into advantage. (Example: Israelis broil in the hot sun – but that hot sun also makes for great solar power, which they’ve used since the 1950s.) Third, chutzpah: “not taking no for an answer, challenging the status quo.” Fourth, education: “no people,” Israel’s chief rabbi explains, “put education so much at the top of their priorities.” Fifth, taking action: in Israel, “it’s almost like there isn’t a barrier between theory and practice.” Sixth, tikkun olam, or “repairing the world” – meaning “striving to exemplify and promote goodness wherever we can.”

SAYING NO-WAY TO NORWAY, BRUCE BAWER’S REASONS WHY HE REFUSED TO TESTIFY AT BREIVIK’S TRIAL IN OSLO……

Here’s the money quote:

BRUCE BAWYER: JEW-HATRED IN NORWAY…….

Jew-branding in Norwegian school still causing the needed outrage around the Internet.

Jew-Hatred in Norway

On Wednesday, June 13, during an Internet search, I ran across a left-wing Norwegian blog with which I was previously unfamiliar. The posting I stumbled upon dated back to February and was concerned with what it described as my many lies about Norway. Chief among these lies, apparently, is my claim that “there is strong antisemitism in Norway’s ‘elite.’” The blogger claimed to find this claim outrageous. “Does he not know the labour party [sic] has historical strong ties with Israel? That a recent prime minister was a devoted friend of Israel?”

Less than an hour later, I followed a link in my inbox to a just-posted Jerusalem Post article by Benjamin Weinthal headlined “Norwegian student in Oslo burns Jewish pupil.” The story, which was originally reported on June 12 by a Norwegian Jewish blog, Med Israel for Fred (With Israel for Peace) – MIFF for short – was straightforward enough: on June 11, at an Oslo secondary school barbecue, an ethnic Norwegian student had burned a Jewish classmate with a red-hot coin, leaving “a very visible burn on the boy’s neck.”

In a letter to Norway’s Minister of Justice, Grete Faremo, the Simon Wiesenthal Center complained that “this child has been the subject of anti-Semitic bullying and violence for the past two years, reportedly, because his father is Israeli,” but that “there has been no reaction by the school, the police or governmental authorities.” The Wiesenthal Center complained that “the silence of the school, the police and your government is too reminiscent of another Norway, under the WWII Nazi collaborator, Quisling.”

Vebjørn Dysvik, Norway’s chargé d’affaires in Tel Aviv, told the Post in an e-mail that he knew nothing more about the case than what had already been reported and insisted that “the Norwegian government has a zero-tolerance policy when it comes to bullying in schools.” But Dysvik didn’t leave it at that. He also took the occasion to complain that the letter from the Simon Wiesenthal Center “contains several extreme statements that lack any foundation in reality. We take exception to the attempt of painting a picture of Norway and Norwegian society as being anti-Semitic. This is a gross distortion of facts for which the Center must bear responsibility.”

BRUCE BAWER CORRECTLY SLAMS HATE NOT HOPE WEBSITE FOR WHAT IT IS: SCANDALOUS LIES……..

But that’s all the left has to offer.

Oh and by BTW, Brievik is an avowed national socialist, enamored with the terrorist network al-Qaida, and IMHO, belongs on the Left (albeit on the right side of the aisle of the socialist ideology). He’s no conservative and cannot be accurately identified as belonging to the present day Right-wing politics. He’s a classic Left-wing ultra-nationalist statist.

NOTE: In other words, the Left owns this whack-job.

The list reads, in large part, like an honor roll of courageous truth-tellers.  In the U.S., people like David Horowitz, Daniel Pipes, Ibn Warraq, Mark Steyn, Robert Spencer, and Andrew McCarthy.  In Canada, Ezra Levant.  In the U.K., Roger Scruton.  In the Netherlands, Geert Wilders.  In Denmark, Lars Hedegaard.  And so on.

But no, this isn’t meant as an honor roll.  It’s a list of individuals – and organizations, too, among them the David Horowitz Freedom Center – that, according to a new “Counter-Jihad Report” by a British group called Hope Not Hate, make up a nefarious network of Islamophobic extremists who inspired the Norwegian mass murderer Anders Behring-Breivik.

It’s no coincidence that this “report” was issued to coincide with the beginning of Breivik’s trial, which started on Monday.  For the people at Hope Not Hate seek to draw an explicit cause-and-effect connection between writings by various critics of Islam and the atrocities of July 22.

One thing’s clear: Breivik has been a terrific gift to those who, for whatever reason, have long been eager to shift focus away from the danger of Islam and to argue that it’s the criticism of Islam that’s the real danger.

It hasn’t been easy for these folks.  Over the last decade, as a result of one brutal jihadist atrocity after another – 9/11, Madrid, London, Beslan, Bali, Mumbai, etc., etc. – Islam has been associated in the Western mind with bloodthirsty slaughter.  Then, on July 22 of last year, a single man, acting alone, killed dozens of people, purportedly in the name of anti-jihadism.  His actions provided everyone who’d like to whitewash Islam with an opportunity to associate not Islam, but its critics, with savage violence.

The people at Hope Not Hate didn’t let this opportunity pass them by.  So – voilà, the “Counter-Jihad Report,” the implicit premise of which is that to be opposed to jihad is, by definition, not only a bad but a downright dangerous thing.

Not that the “report” actually addresses the subject of jihad – no, jihad itself is left almost entirely out of the equation.  Indeed, to read this thing, you’d almost think that jihad were some fantasy cooked up by “counter-jihadists” in order to smear Islam.

I won’t mince words: the “report” is a thoroughly repulsive piece of work.  One repulsive thing about it is that it brings together the names of serious, respectable, and well-informed critics of Islam – individuals and organizations that are profoundly concerned about the rise of Islam in the West because they recognize it as a threat to freedom and human rights – with the names of neo-Nazis.  Also repulsive is the masthead on this page, on which pictures of David Horowitz and Geert Wilders are juxtaposed with a photo of Breivik, in full faux-military regalia, aiming his gun.

FJORDMAN REVIEWS BRUCE BAWER’S LATEST BOOK: THE NEW QUISLINGS…….

The Tundra Tabloids publishes the following review at Fjordman’s request.

Book Review: The New Quislings

The American author Bruce Bawer, who has lived in Norway for over a decade, in early 2012 published the ebook The New Quislings: How the International Left Used the Oslo Massacre to Silence Debate About Islam. It deals with the aftermath of the terror attacks in the Oslo region on July 22, 2011 where Anders Behring Breivik killed 77 people in cold blood, first with a bomb in central Oslo and then with a shooting spree at the island of Utøya outside of the city. Relative to its population size, Norway lost more of its citizens in these attacks than the USA did during the Islamic Jihadist attacks of September 11, 2001.

A similarly deadly atrocity somewhere else would have caused a lot of grief and pain, but perhaps not triggered the nearly existential crisis that it did in Norway. As a previously sheltered Scandinavian society, Norway has had a tendency to see itself as immune to the ills that befall the rest of the world. The country’s left-wing political elite, which sees itself as a beacon of virtue, eagerly seized upon a suggestion by the American writer and alleged terror expert Mark Juergensmeyer that Breivik was a “Christian terrorist,” although Breivik openly admits that he is not a religious man at all. Even his defense lawyer Geir Lippestad states that ABB respects and admires the violent methods employed by the Islamic Jihadist terrorist network al-Qaida.

Bawer is at his best in this book when pointing out that in the days following the terror attacks, the Norwegian political and media elites were busy reaching out to imams and visiting mosques, while at the sametime ruthlessly attacking all those who were seen as critical of Islam, Multiculturalism or the official immigration policies. These local dissidents were the only ones who were seen as outside of the circle of universal peace, love and the brotherhood of man.

He notes the glaring double standard that if people who commit acts of terrorism shout Islamic slogans or cite the Koran as justification for their actions, this has absolutely nothing to do with Islam in any way. On the other hand, if a mentally unbalanced man quotes a large number of peaceful individuals and uses this to justify terrorism, these writers should immediately be attacked and blamed as co-responsible for his acts. Apparently, terror has absolutely nothing to do with Islam but a lot to do with so-called Islamophobia.

Breivik’s unspeakable atrocities in a single day gave the ruling Multicultural elites a chance to reestablish their authority, which had been slowly, but steadily eroding for years, and suppress public dissent. Far too often, they eagerly grasped this opportunity with both hands. In the first months after 22/7, the only possible choice for individuals who had been critical of Islam or mass immigration was to repent, now, of face public ostracism. Bawer describes a repressive atmosphere of fear and public ritual shaming of political dissidents.

OH SO PROGRESSIVE NORWAY TO DEPORT GAY IRAQI, TELLS HIM TO CONFORM TO EXISTING CULTURAL NORMS…….

Yes, you read that right..

They execute homosexuals in the Middle East, but the ”progressive” state of Norway prefers to send this man back anyways, and to boot, tells him to begin learning the straight life if he wants to survive. Can you imagine the sanctimonious display of outrage by the present Norwegian government if it was the state of Israel sending this Arab homosexual asylum seeker back to his homeland? The Norwegian foreign ministry would be pounding its fist on the desk demanding for Israel to “do the right thing”. KGS

The Poison of Multiculturalism

Posted By Bruce Bawer On December 5, 2011 @ 12:16 am In Daily Mailer,FrontPage | 58 Comments

If you want a pretty good example of just why multiculturalism is so poisonous, here’s one for you.

I live in Norway. Here, as elsewhere in Europe, there reside innumerable immigrants from the Muslim world who despise Western values, reject sexual equality, and affirm primitive patriarchal codes and concepts of “honor” that condemn people (mostly females) to death for infractions that neither you nor I would even recognize as infractions. Nonetheless these individuals enjoy Norwegian residency, and in some cases Norwegian citizenship, which some of them were granted because they claimed asylum (most likely on specious grounds, as demonstrated by the fact that many, if not most, of them return regularly to the countries from which they supposedly “fled”), and which others were granted because they married Norwegian residents (usually their own cousins, whom they married for no other reason than to acquire Western residency).

Every now and then there come along people from the Muslim world who are legitimate asylum-seekers – people who really would be in danger if they returned to their homelands, people to whom Western countries should feel a moral obligation to grant residency, and people from whose presence those countries would actually benefit, precisely because they’re people who will appreciate freedom more than most of the rest of us do. To put it another way, they’re the kind of immigrants who, generation by generation, have renewed the American spirit and the American dream by reminding those of us whose ancestors preceded them just how precious a thing freedom is.

Meet “Azad.” He’s a gay Iraqi who, according to an article at the website of NRK, the Norwegian national broadcasting system, has been in a committed relationship since 2006 with somebody named Odd Arne Henriksen. (I don’t know either of these guys, though my partner, after looking at the picture of the two of them that accompanies the article, says he’s seen Henriksen around town a number of times. Oslo is a pretty small city.)

For years, apparently, “Azad” has lived in Norway without causing any problems or being a burden on the state. But now an appellate court has ordered that he be deported to Iraq. If he goes back there, he says, “my clan will kill me.” Indeed, the court recognizes that if it becomes known in Iraq that “Azad” is gay, he risks “exclusion, isolation, and physical punishment.” (In fact, he risks much worse.) Nonetheless the court has ruled that “Azad,” in the words of NRK’s report, “must comply with his homeland’s sociocultural norms.”

Let me repeat that: he “must comply with his homeland’s sociocultural norms.”

BRUCE BAWER: NORWAY’S EMBRACE OF THE ISLAMIC TYRANNY……..

Norway should be deemed a pariah state.

This is an excellent article by Bruce Bawer, he captures the mindset of Norway’s political and cultural elite (which includes the media and academia) and lays it bare for the naked eye. Norway Embraces Islamist Tyranny

by Bruce Bawer
November 16, 2011 at 5:00 am

Hudson Institute: Anti-Semitism in Norway, where I have lived for twelve years, is over the top. I have never quite gotten used to it. Every now and then I hear or read something that reminds me that I am living in Europe, in a country that was occupied by the Nazis, and where a lot of people were perfectly okay with that. I think it is fair to say that anti-Semitism in Norway is most virulent among the cultural elite – the academics, intellectuals, writers, journalists, politicians, and technocrats – although thanks to the media and schools, it has trickled down to many ordinary Norwegians, some of whom may never even have met a Jewish person.

This anti-Semitism manifests itself in various ways. When Obama became president, former Norwegian prime minister Kåre Willoch said things did not look promising because Obama had “chosen a Jew as chief of staff.” The chief rabbi of the Oslo synagogue reportedly receives a pile of hate mail every day. During the Gaza War, a major Norwegian newspaper had trouble finding Norwegian Jews who were willing to comment on the record about the war: they said they were scared of repercussions. Norwegian academics have sought to ban contacts with Israeli universities. Norwegian activists have encouraged boycotts of Israeli products.

There is terrible anti-Semitic bullying in the schools. Every so often, a high-profile professor or activist or famous author will write a virulent op-ed or give an angry speech denouncing Israel and insulting Jews. Nothing could be safer for them to say; no one will seek to harm them physically or otherwise – as opposed to what would happen if, say, they made certain public statements about Islam. And they know this. Norway’s most respected newspaper cartoonist, Finn Graff, who has admitted that he never draws cartoons about Islam because he is scared for his life, has frequently drawn cartoons comparing Israelis to Nazis; he knows Jews will never harm him.

These anti-Semitic op-eds and speeches and cartoons are never remotely fresh, witty, or original; all they ever do is recycle tired cultural-elite clichés. And their creators get nothing but praise from their colleagues, who celebrate them as courageous truth-tellers. It is much more acceptable to scream “kill the Jews” at an anti-Israeli protest than it is to criticize Hamas.

BRUCE BAWER: NORWAY’S POLITICAL SYSTEM ATTACKING THE TRUTH TELLERS……..

The very agency that Norway needs most, (the HRS) is being squeezed from funding. KGS

Bruce Bawer: A Blow to Freedom in Norway

[…] I have worked for HRS, and am proud of it.  Founded a decade ago by two women, Hege Storhaug and Rita Karlsen, with a passionate interest in guaranteeing the rights of Muslim women and girls living in Europe, it has always batted very much above its weight, producing solid reports that have led to important legislation in both Norway and Denmark relating to subjects like forced marriage, honor killing, genital mutilation, the sending of European Muslim children to Koran schools in Pakistan to be “educated,” and the difference between men’s and women’s right to divorce under sharia law.

HRS’s work has always been controversial among multiculturalists, because instead of bowing before the immigrant group and its cultural and religious values, HRS has fiercely defended the human rights and integrity of individuals within that group.  This emphasis differentiates it dramatically from a raft of other official and quasi-official “rights” groups in Norway and elsewhere in Europe, which produce little more than PC rhetoric designed to promulgate the idea that the only real problem with Islam in Europe is native Europeans’ Islamophobia.

The public face of HRS is Hege Storhaug.  Although her career has been driven by an ardent devotion to equality, religious liberty, and freedom of expression, she has consistently been smeared by left-wing critics as a disrespecter of Islam, and she was among the figures who were most brutally blasted by the cynical multiculturalists in the weeks after July 22.  Audun Lysbakken, a young member of the furthest left of Norway’s major parties, the Socialist Left (which makes Labor look moderate), serves as Minister of Children, Equality, and Social Inclusion; it is through his ministry that HRS is funded, and he has for some years now played the Javert to HRS’s Jean Valjean, making no secret of his eagerness to leave HRS high and dry.  July 22 provided him with a great deal of leverage to do so.  Now, with the release of next year’s budget, he would appear to have succeeded, if not entirely but in very large part, at his unworthy goal.

THE HUMANITARIAN RACIST NORWEGIAN LEFT SMEARS HUMANITARIAN BRUCE BAWER AS A RACIST…….

Norway is a Scandinavian Orwellian nightmare, where racism assumes the mantle of humanitarianism, anti-Israelism/Jew hatred is championed by “philosemites”, truth is falsehood and injustice the rule of law.  Norway, having been so thoroughly corrupted over the decades by far Leftist governments, can’t tell the light of Summer’s day from the darkest of Winter’s nights. Simply put, Norway is a gross caricature of a western liberal democracy.
Enter Bruce Bawer. Here’s a man who has championed the rights of women, vocally defended the need to safeguard their rights, and the rights of all citizens of Norway, at the forefront of ensuring that children are not victimized, and yet, he’s being branded a “waycist”. It’s because of his insistence on naming the name “that shall not be mentioned”, the ideology of Islam, as being the prime motivating factor in the victimization of immigrants in Norway.
It’s not ethnic Norwegians who are victimizing young girls with female genital mutilation (FGM) or forcing the women folk, in most cases young girls, to be married, or forcibly keeping their females under lock and key, brutalizing gays or promoting rioting in the streets for whatever grievances real or imagined or overly represented in the crime rate, like in the rape statistics etc..
No, Muslims are the ones guilty of that, and saying so isn’t an act of racism, but the speaking of the truth. So now the Orwellian (and humanitarian racist) Norwegian state has cast its eye upon the next victim, for daring to utter the truth about its society. Finland has Jussi Halla-aho, The Netherlands has Geert Wilders, Austria has Susanne Winter, and now Norway has Bruce Bawer. Let Bruce fill you in on the situation.

I’ve Become an Enemy of the People for Speaking the Truth About Islam

When it comes to the right to speak one’s mind about Islam, the record of the last few years makes it clear which direction the West is moving in. In France and Italy, Oriana Fallaci is put on trial for disparaging Islam. In Canada, Mark Steyn and Ezra Levant are hauled before “human rights commission” tribunals for criticizing Islam in print. In Australia, an Islamic organization sues two pastors for “vilification of Muslims.” In Britain, a Daily Telegraph columnist is arrested on charges of hate speech for having written negatively about Islam, and the Archbishop of Canterbury proposes that Parliament pass stronger laws against such speech acts. And in the Netherlands, Geert Wilders, the head of the Freedom Party, which performed so well in the June 9 general elections that Wilders may end up in the governing coalition, still faces trial for having made a film about the Koranic foundations of terrorism.
Then there’s Norway, where I live, and where the last few days have seen yet another dark development. By way of background, permit me to begin by quoting myself. On pages 230-31 of my book Surrender: Appeasing Islam, Sacrificing Freedom I sum up the more alarming aspects of Norway’s Discrimination Law, passed in 2005:

It forbids “harassment on the grounds of ethnicity, national origin, ancestry, skin color, language, religion, or beliefs,” and, in turn, defines harassment as “actions, omissions, or utterances [my emphasis] that have the effect or are intended to have the effect of being insulting, intimidating, hostile, degrading, or humiliating.”

In other words, it’s illegal just to say certain things.

Defendants may be accused not only by the individuals whom they’ve supposedly offended but also by semiofficial organs such as the Anti-Racist Center and the Center against Ethnic Discrimination (both of which helped formulate the law, and both of which exist less to oppose real racism and discrimination than to oppose political incorrectness generally) or by the government’s Equality and Anti-Discrimination Ombud.

Which means that a handful of far-left organizations have been given enormous power to silence those they disagree with.

Violations of the law by individuals are punishable by fine; violations by individuals in concert with at least two other persons (such as a writer conspiring with an editor and publisher, perhaps?) can be punished by up to three years’ imprisonment — this in a country where murderers often get off with less. Moreover, the burden of proof is on the accused: you’re guilty until proven innocent.

And this in a supposedly free country.

Which brings us to the most recent developments. Over the years, I’ve had a close association with Human Rights Service (HRS), a small Oslo-based foundation that formulates and proposes government policies designed to combat the subjection and abuse of females in Muslim communities. I’ve translated materials for HRS and written pieces in Norwegian for the HRS website. Last fall, after suggesting that HRS expand its site to include articles in English by contributors from around Europe and elsewhere — so that writers from different countries could compare notes, as it were, about their experiences with Islam, immigration, and integration — I began working regularly for HRS, writing, soliciting, and translating pieces for their new international web pages.
Meanwhile HRS was going through a rough patch. Ever since its establishment in 2001, it has been despised by many people on the Norwegian left — the same folks who hate Israel and who feel warmly about Hamas. The two women who run HRS, Hege Storhaug and Rita Karlsen, have labored tirelessly against monstrous practices like honor killing, forced marriage, and female genital mutilation, and for doing so have won the lifelong gratitude of countless Muslim girls and women — but as far as their PC enemies are concerned, to condemn any aspect of Islam is to be an Islamophobe, pure and simple. Last summer, a couple of newspapers, the far-left Dagbladet and the Communist Klassekampen, waged a brutal and breathtakingly mendacious smear campaign against HRS, the obvious intent of which was to bring it down once and for all.

Apostate From Islam Watch: Rifqa Bary is ‘Johnsoned’ by Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs…….

Rifqa Bary: I’ll pray for ya Chuck

Charles Johnson at LGF attempts another try in defeating the Counterjihad with his swipe at a poor defensless girl, a former Muslim who flees her home because of her father’s threat to kill for her conversion to Christianity. Great going Charles Johnson, now Rifqa Bary knows what it’s like to be *Johnsoned* by the Lidless Eye as well.

Charles Johnson: “The anti-Islam blogs have been hyperventilating for months over the case of Rifqa Bary — a Muslim teenager who converted to Christianity, ran away from home, and found a new home with a radical fundamentalist Christian preacher, Blake Lorenz of the “Global Revolution Church.”
People like Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer have injected themselves into this case, judged her parents, and found them guilty of intended murder — because they’re incapable of imagining that Muslim parents might not be murderous monsters. In their twisted paranoid world, all Muslims are honor killers, and that’s all there is to it. Evidence be damned. If her parents say they love her and would never hurt her … well, that’s just what a lying Muslim would say, isn’t it?
Now the Florida Department of Law Enforcement has issued a report on their extensive investigation into the charges that Rifqa Bary’s parents intended to murder her, and it concludes that there is “no evidence whatsoever of alleged abuse or threats of death made by the girl’s parents.”
He then links to a CNN report that mentions the findings of the local police which were lead by the nose during their investigation, by CAIR, a front group of the Muslim Brotherhood. Of course, when an Islamist, fundamentalist organization is giving instructions to the ignorant police on how to approach the situation of apostacy, the end result is assured, and Johnson wants to place the fate of the girl, Rifqa Bary, in CAIR’s hands.
CJ:I’m fairly sure that Spencer and Geller will now attack me, but that’s standard fare for them when they’re caught out espousing bigotry and inciting hatred.”
No Johnson, you’ve been caught playing the stooge for these radicals, which does not come as a surprise since you’ve long given up on the idea that Islam, and the people that actively promote it, pose an existential threat to our liberal values and democratic system of government and rule of law.
Folks, here is the following link to a report by John Guandolo of the FDLE analysis of Rifqa Bary investigation:

[Note: John D. Guandolo is a 12 ½ year veteran of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. At the request of the Center for Security Policy, he prepared an assessment of the Florida Department of Law Enforcement’s (FDLE) investigation of the Ohio-based parents of former Muslim Rifqa Bary, the 17-year old apostate from Islam who has sought refuge in the state of Florida. The FDLE report is provided here, and is available as searchable text for the first time, below his analysis. The significant errors and omissions that Mr. Guandolo and other experts have found in this FDLE investigation show a failure in FDLE’s professional responsibility in handling the Rifqa Bary case. Governor Crist and FDLE management need to get new investigators on the job, start over, and this time do it right. A life may be at stake due to FDLE negligence– and willful blindness– in conducting this investigation.]
John D. Guandolo:
Response to FDLE Investigative Report on Rifqa Bary Matter
Upon my review of the report filed by the FDLE regarding the Rifqa Bary Matter in Florida, I offer my professional opinion.
1. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Investigative Summary OR-73-1741 encapsulates the investigation into allegations made by Fathima Rifqa Bary (hereafter referred to as “Rifqa Bary”) that she is or may be in physical danger from her father, Mohamed Bary, or others. Point 4 on page 2 of the report states Rifqa Bary believes her life to be in danger from an “honor killing” by her family or others, which she states is in accordance with Islamic Law. The report finds: “Ms. Bary’s concern that she may be killed because of her conversion from Islam to Christianity remains a subjective and speculative concern…” and concludes there is no conspiracy to commit violence against her. The investigators in this matter offer this opinion void of any knowable facts.
In fact, a due diligence review would reveal the existence of authoritative Islamic Law texts officially translated into English. This review would further reveal Islamic Law – which is real law – has requirements and rules as to how to deal with those who leave Islam [eg The Classic Manual of Islamic Sacred Law, “Umdat al-Salik” also known as “Reliance of the Traveller” – publicly available]. If it can be shown (1) there is a requirement in Islamic Law for killing Ms. Bary as a publicly declared apostate from Islam, (2) that her parents adhere to Islamic Law, and (3) that she did, in fact, leave Islam and convert to Christianity, then the FDLE has a professional responsibility to include these facts in this report, and investigate this matter fully. There is nothing subjective about this – these are all ascertainable facts. I would hope the Florida State’s Attorney’s Office has done their due diligence on this matter and is aware of this

Everything that Rifqa Bary has been saying about her conversion, when she converted, and how, and about the people she met who have been speaking on her behalf, have all checked out. The parents’ stories however, have not, as Pamela Geller’s extensive reporting on the case has shown, but Charles Johnson, in order to try and score some meaningless points against Pamelal Geller and Robert Spencer, chooses to side with the parents, and CAIR, and the little life of Rifqa Bary be damned.
Here is an excerpt from a recent video of rifqa Bary that Pamela Geller’s Atlas Shrugs is running, that validates the girl’s claim that she’s been a Christian for over three years before fleeing from Ohio:

Rifqa: I am sixteen and I love Jesus, I’m crazy how I found the Lord but, people were blown away but, my parents are Muslims, radical, radical Muslims. You guys don’t know the history of Islam, it’s really hostile towards Christianity and the mere word of Christian can bring such a hatred in them right. I’m a secret Chrisitian, I’ve been hiding for a long time, three of four years. They can’t know of my faith, because if they do know, the consquences are really hard. Just the culture and background they come from like, is so hostile towards Chrisianity ….the consequences are great.
Yeah, I’ll choose Rifqa Bary’s credibility over that of her parents, unlike the FINK Charles Johnson, who should now be considered a stooge for CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood. Here is what Bruce Bawer recently stated in Canada during a conference sponsered by the Canadian chapter of the International Free Press Society, concerning Muslims leaving Islam and the response of those who turn a deaf ear to their plight,….just like Charles Johnson of LGF is doing to Rifqa Bary.
Bruce Bawer: “And in many cases they shamefully close their eyes to honor killings. The murders by parents and siblings, of girls and women who in some cases doing no more than looking at a boy the wrong way, have according to Islamic beliefs, soiled family honor. European authorities are so much a prisoner of multiculturalism that they´could actually believe that their obligation in such matters is not to protect innocent children from brutality, but to display sensitivity to cultural difference.

Within Muslim communities, there are only a very few unimaginably bold men and women, who dare to speak out against the traditional sharia based autocracy of the Mullahs and Imams. And when they did so, they were not defended, let alone praised for it by the government, media or by professors, but were rather accused of betraying their people and rocking the boat. Take the writer Whalid Al-Kalbaisi, who came to Norway from Iraq many years ago, and has recounted a conversation he had with the Ethnic Norwegian Director at what Al-Kalbaisi described as an “international cultural center.

This cultural bureaucrat plainly thought of himself as being devoted heart and soul to the welfare of immigrants, but when Al-Kalbaisi raised the question of the freedom of Muslims to criticize or even leave their own religion, the cultural bureaucrat was displeased. “You are a Muslim Whalid”, he said, “and you must not lose your identity. ” “But do you believe”, Whalid asked, “that I will lose my identity if I believe in the freedom of expression?” “Listen” the man replied, “this is something that you decide yourself, but your attitude causes a lot of problems. We want to create a multicultural society and we don’t want to dissolve these foreign cultures, your attitude alters all our plans, it creates conflicts between immigrants.”

And so it goes, while Western Europe multicultural mentality views native Westerners as individuals, who have an inalienable right to self determination, and views Muslim immigrants as a member of a group with its own collective self definition, and while those within the group who labor to reinforce to enforce that self definition are rewarded. Those who try to live as individuals in ways that are inconsistent with the community orthodoxy, are seen as making problems, creating conflicts. For the only legitimate identity they have in the eyes of European multiculturalists, is a collective identity, an identity yoked entirely and irreparably to skin color, ethnicity and religious background.

If ethnic Europeans choose to belong to any religion or none, but are expected to respect the law, Muslims, as Al.Kalbaisi has pointed out, are seen as quote, religious beings by nature, and therefore as people who cannot be expected to conform to European law and culture, but who cannot be blamed for adhering to the most inhuman of Koranic precepts. It is precisely this kind of thinking, this type of multicultural thinking that has led judges across Europe to give perpetrators of honor killings, not heavier sentences, because their crimes are premeditated, but lighter sentences because their crimes in the eyes of the perpetrators of native cultures are not crimes at all.

Yeah, the Tundra Tabloids will believe the words of Rifqa Bary over that of her parents, and Charles Johnson, any day of the week. KGS

Rifqa Bary in Context: Muslims Who Convert To Christianity and The Price They Pay…….

Warm and fuzzy multiculturalism
works against the immigrant as well

Borrowed from Pamela Geller at Atlas Shrugs, which dovetails nicely with what Bruce Bawer spoke about the other night at the International Free Press Society conference in Canada.  First up, is what Bruce Bawer spoke about concerning the multiculturalists who treat Muslims as a collective, as opposed to how they treat the native European as an individual. Real stunning when you think about it. KGS

Julia Duin wrote a very moving October 2002 piece in the Washington Times about the plight of Muslim apostates to Christianity here in the US. Much thanks to Dr. Andrew Bostom for sending it on. Read the whole thing.
Daring Leaps of Faith
One Washington area pastor asked not to be named because of a nearby mosque that has been scrutinizing him.
“I have seven Muslims who have converted,” he said. “I do not want any trouble.”
Ann Buwalda, an immigration lawyer for Just Law International in Fairfax, said she’s been approached by Pakistani converts who are refugees. One man, “Masih,” was working at a retail store in Northern Virginia, she said, when a Muslim co-worker from Pakistan noticed he was wearing a cross. The man asked Masih why he was wearing it.
“I am Christian,” said Masih. The Muslim co-worker became angry, called him derogatory names in their native language, shoved him in a hallway and thereafter tried to get him fired and threatened him after work one night.
“He told the security guards at the retail store, so the employer has separated the two,” Ms. Buwalda said.
“I worry about these people. I have given him a cell phone so he can call 911 if these guys stalk him. He has informally told police about it but filed no report” because, she adds, most refugees view American law enforcement in the same light as police from their own countries: people to be avoided at all costs.
She tells of another young female convert who wears a cross and who was stalked by a Muslim Pakistani taxi driver in the retail store where she works. Yet another Pakistani woman who converted to Christianity was threatened with death by Pakistani neighbors. “That kind of stuff, it’s frightening when it happens,” Ms. Buwalda said.
Victor Gill, a Pakistani immigrant who lives in Philadelphia and who leads a ministry called Christian Voice of Pakistan, said converts are regularly harassed in the United States.
“The threat is real,” he said. “They think they are doing something to earn credit with God when they kill Christians. When John Walker Lindh converted to Islam, his family supported him. But not so for the converts here. The Koran said people who leave Islam must be killed.”
Killing converts
Actually, that instruction is in the Hadith, a collection of the sayings of Muhammad, the founder of Islam. It has been enforced in varying ways. Female converts are usually imprisoned in a room — for months or years — as a sort of psychological torture until they recant. As for the men, all the traditional schools of Shariah (Islamic) law stipulate that “apostates” — those who leave their faith — must die. But before they die, they lose all civil liberties. Their children are taken away, their marriage is dissolved, they lose their family inheritance and they cannot be buried in a Muslim graveyard.
