Lone wolves, 1.6 billion potentials out there.
Al Qaeda calls on ‘lone wolf’ jihadis to kill U.S. business leaders in their homes in a bid to dent the country’s economy – and Bill Gates is among the ‘targets’
Al Qaeda, formerly headed by Osama Bin Laden (pictured), has called on jihadis to carry out lone wolf attacks. The organisation’s magazine said jihadis should attempt to assassinate business leaders in the U.S.
- The latest issue of Inspire is devoted to the jihadis’ belief in ‘assassination’
- It calls on militants to attack America’s business leaders and entrepreneurs
- The author offers advice on how to make the attempts ‘professional’
- Bill Gates is among those pictured in article’s ‘target list of personalities’
Al Qaeda is encouraging lone wolf jihadis to kill American business leaders and entrepreneurs in a bid to dent the country’s economy.
The latest issue of Inspire, the terrorist group’s propaganda magazine, focuses on ‘assassination’, which it claims was a hallmark strategy of the Prophet’s holy war.
Describing the killings as adhering to its policy of ‘cutting the nerves and isolating the head’ of the U.S, it told followers to target those who invest wealth in the country.

Bangladesh in denial, al-Qaeda releases new video of gay rights activist’s assassination
Released online on Ansar al Islam Bangladesh’s Twitter account on Friday, the video once again reiterates the killing to be the work of al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS)
Even as the Bangladesh police dismiss the claims of al Qaeda-affiliated Ansar al Islam behind the twin murders in Dhaka, the militant group released a new video showing graphic images of gay rights activist Xulhaz Mannan and his friend Tanay Majumder, lying in pool of blood in the former’s apartment. The video comes three days after Ansar al Islam released a statement claiming responsibility for the murders of ‘pioneers of practicing and promoting homosexuality in Bangladesh.’
Released online on Ansar al Islam Bangladesh’s Twitter account on Friday, the video once again reiterates the killing to be the work of al Qaeda in Indian Subcontinent (AQIS). The video merges clips of international news media which extensively reported on the incident — Mannan was a USAID employee and US authorities including Secretary of State John Kerry and the ambassador of Bangladesh, Marcia Bernicat expressed outrage over his death — with graphic images of Mannan and Tanay’s bodies being dragged along a pool of blood in his apartment. The video indicates that the assailants had time to capture the ghastly images on film after the killings and flee in time.
Worth a triple face-palm…….
Intelligence Service: Radical Muslims seek Weapons
The annual report of the General Intelligence and Security Service (AIVD) warns that there are radical Muslims in the Netherlands who seek for weapons. They are encouraged by Islamic State and Al Qaeda to undertake attacks in The Netherlands. The AIVD says that it is not always clear what these Muslims intend to do with these weapons. It sees a terrorist attack in The Netherlands as a realistic possibility.
Look at these two….no longer a threat?
Two Al Qaeda explosives experts are transferred from Guantanamo Bay to Senegal after Obama administration determines they are ‘no longer a threat’
- Salem Abdu Salam Ghereby, 55, and Omar Khalif Mohammed Abu Baker Mahjour, 44, were both members of the Libya Islamic Fighting Group
- With the release of the two Libyans, there are 89 men left, including 35 cleared for release who are expected to be gone within months
- Their departure comes amid an effort by President Barack Obama to release Guantanamo prisoners and close the detention center
- Mahjour had been held on suspicion of helping re-establish Al-Qaeda camps following their destruction by US bombings in 1998
- Ghereby’s file states he had attended multiple training camps and received explosives training from a senior Al-Qaeda explosives expert
Senegal has agreed to take in two Libyans who spent nearly 14 years in custody at the U.S. base in Cuba without charge, becoming the second country in West Africa to accept former detainees, officials said Monday.
Salem Abdu Salam Ghereby, 55, and Omar Khalif Mohammed Abu Baker Mahjour Umar, who records show is about 44, were both members of the Libya Islamic Fighting Group, an organization that sought the ouster of Libyan leader Moammar Gadhafi and had been designated a terrorist organization by the U.S. since 2004.
Mahjour Umar had been held on suspicion of helping re-establish Al-Qaeda camps following their destruction by US bombings in 1998, and was identified as an explosives and weapons trainer, according to his leaked file.
Transferred: Salem Abdu Salam Ghereby (left), 55, and Omar Khalif Mohammed Abu Baker Mahjour Umar, 44, who spent nearly 14 years in custody at Guantanamo Bay (file photo of the U.S. base is pictured above) in Cuba without charge have been transferred to Senegal
Ghereby’s file states he had attended multiple training camps and received explosives training from a senior Al-Qaeda explosives expert. Neither man was ever charged.
Khalif’s lawyer, Ramzi Kassem, said his client is looking forward to ‘receiving proper medical care’ as he is missing his right leg below the knee after stepping on a land mine in Afghanistan in 1998. He is also blind in one eye, and has shrapnel in his leg and arm.
‘This is a bittersweet moment. I’m unsure why a half-blind, one-legged man with only one fully-functioning arm, and whose only supposed crime was to object to the Gadhafi dictatorship in his native Libya, was not freed years ago,’ said Kassem, a professor at City University of New York School of Law.
Ghereby had dropped a legal challenge to his detention after he was cleared for transfer from Guantanamo by U.S. authorities in 2010.
He is hoping that his wife and three children, including a daughter born after he was taken into custody, will be able to join him in Senegal, according to his lawyer, Richard Wilson, a retired law professor from American University in Washington.
‘He was thrilled when he heard that Senegal was receptive to family reunification,’ Wilson said.
Their departure comes amid an effort by President Barack Obama to release Guantanamo prisoners who are no longer deemed a threat and to eventually close the detention center, a prospect that faces strong opposition in U.S. Congress.
Which makes the case of keeping these vermin locked up until they fall over dead, all the more appealing.
Osama bin Laden’s ex bodyguard who was released from Guantanamo Bay is now the star of al Qaeda propaganda videos
- Ibrahim al Qosi, 55, was held at Guantanamo Bay for over 10 years
- He was released in 2012 as part of a plea deal after pleading guilty to conspiracy and supporting terrorism
- In December, al Qosi began appearing in propaganda videos for al Qaeda
- The most recent video has al Qosi urging young jihadist to join al Qaeda’s war in Yemen
Ibrahim al Qosi, 55, was released from Guantanamo Bay in 2012 and has emerged as a face of al Qaeda
A jihadist who was identified as a top aide of Osama bin Laden and detained at Guantanamo Bay for over ten years before being released in 2012 has emerged as a prominent face of the terror organization al Qaeda.
In a video released February 6, Ibrahim al Qosi denounced the Saudi monarchy and urged young jihadists to travel to Yemen to join the insurgency of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP).
The 55-year-old jihadist was apprehended in Afghanistan in December, 2001 and subsequently jailed at the US prison complex in Guantanamo Bay.
He pleaded guilty to conspiracy and providing material support to al Qaeda in 2010 under a plea deal that led to his release two years later.
In July, 2012, al Qosi was transferred to his native Sudan.
Back in the Sudanese capital Khartoum al Qosi supposedly took a job as a cab driver, according to his US attorney Paul Reichler who spoke to the Miami Herald in December.
But when his face began appearing in al Qaeda propaganda videos last year, it became apparent al Qosi wasn’t committed to living in ‘peace, quiet and freedom,’ as he had relayed to Reichler.
In the latest propaganda video, which appears to be the fourth in a string of messages featuring al Qosi published since December, the former US detainee denounced a recent mass execution in Saudi Arabia, according to the Long War Journal.
According to al Qosi, the decision in early January by Saudi authorities to execute 47 men accused of aiding terrorism is further reason for al Qaeda to violently oppose the Saudi monarchy.
The Guantanamo Bay prison camp is a controversial detention facility opened in 2002 and located in Cuba
Osama bin Laden, left, was an early leader of the terrorist group al Qaeda. Ibrahim al Qosi, right, was bin Laden’s bodyguard and has been featured in al Qaeda propaganda videos following his release from Guantanamo Bay in 2012
Al Qaeda’s case against Saudi Arabia stems from the regime’s 1990 decision to allow US troops to be stationed in the country in the run-up to the Gulf War.
Viewed by Al Qaeda as an ‘occupation,’ the landing of US troops led bin Laden, the group’s then-leader, to declare war against America, al Qosi said.
Although bin Laden never recognized the Saudi monarchy as legitimate, the terrorist leader decided against declaring jihad on Saudi Arabia to avoid ‘internal strife and confusion’ among Muslims, al Qosi said according to the Long War Journal.
Al Qosi began fighting for al Qaeda in 1990 and rose to become a member of bin Laden’s personal security team in 1994, according to a December report by the Long War Journal.
There are no ‘hostages’ for islam 101 islamonazis, just people that they haven’t murdered yet.
Terror in Burkina Faso: Ten bodies found after Masked Al-Qaeda take over top tourist hotel as security forces storm building to save 33 hostages
Bombs: Masked jihadi gunmen have killed at least 20 people with ‘foreigners among the dead’ as security forces battle to free hostages
- At least ten bodies have been found inside the Cappuccino Cafe, a restaurant that is located next to the Splendid Hotel in Ouagadougou
- At least 20 people have died in the attack on the Splendid Hotel in Burkina Faso’s capital, Ouagadougou, West Africa
- Security forces stormed the hotel to break the five hour siege after masked gunmen took hostages
- Russia’s Honorary Council in Burkina Faso said foreigners are among the dead, ‘possibly including Europeans’
- Witnesses say two car bombs exploded at 7.30pm local time, followed by a fierce gunbattle with security forces
- The business district hotel and neighbouring Cafe Cappuccino is used by UN staff and westerners
- Local Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) branch Al-Mourabitoun have claimed the attack
- Thirty-three hostages were freed by security Burkinabe and French soldiers early Saturday morning
- Of the several of people wounded in the attack was identified as French national Leila Alaoui
Burkina Faso has largely been spared the violence wracked by Islamic extremist groups in northern neighbour Mali|
At least ten bodies have been found inside a cafe in Burkina Faso’s capital that was attacked by the same al-Qaida militants who seized an upscale hotel in the capital about 10 hours ago, a government minister said.
Heavy gunfire, meanwhile, has erupted again early Saturday in Ouagadougou as about 30 French and 40 Burkinabe forces worked to free an unknown number of hostages still held inside. Already some 33 people have made it to safety amid a siege launched by at least four gunmen.
Of those who were freed was Clément Sawadogo, a government minister, Remis Dandjinou, Burkina Faso’s minister of communication said on Twitter, adding that the operation to retake the Ouagadougou’s Splendid Hotel is ongoing.
Internal Affairs Minister Simon Compaore said the bodies are inside the Cappuccino Cafe, a restaurant that is located next to the Splendid Hotel. The identities have not been released.
It is unknown how many hostages remain trapped inside the hotel, which was accidentally set on fire during the rescue attempt.
Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb claimed responsibility for the attack, according to a statement released on an encrypted messaging app. The group said the fighters have killed as many as 30 hostages.
The organization claims that the operation was ‘revenge against France and the disbelieving West’, according to New York Times foreign correspondent Rukmini Callimachi.
The group said it targeted Splendid Hotel because it is popular with foreigners, saying the attack as sent a message ‘written by the heroes of Islam with their blood and body parts’, according to The New York Times.
The statement was addressed to a foreign audience as ‘the Cross-worshipers, the occupiers of our lands, the looters of our wealth and the abusers of our security’, saying the attack was intended ‘to punish the Cross-worshipers for their crimes against our people in Central Africa, Mali and other lands of the Muslims, and to avenge our Prophet, God’s peace and blessings be upon him’.
Of those wounded is French national Leila Alaoui, who is undergoing surgery, according to New York Times contributor Aida Alami.
French television network France 24 reported that at least 20 people have been killed in the attack. Two survivors, who did not give their names, were interviewed by the station.

Al Qaeda threatens Saudi Arabia over plan to execute prisoners
Al Qaeda’s affiliate in Yemen threatened the Saudi government over its plan to carry out a mass execution of prisoners, including al Qaeda members, the militant group announced in a statement posted on social media.
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), one of the deadliest branches of the global militant network, said it was aware of Saudi intentions to execute its members in Saudi prisons and pledged to carry out attacks in response.
“We swear to God, our blood will be shed before the blood of our captives, and their pure blood will not dry before we shed the blood of the soldiers of Al Saud,” the group said in a statement which was posted on Twitter and dated Tuesday.
“We will not enjoy life unless we get the necks of the Al Saud rulers.”
Local media reported last week that Saudi authorities planned to execute more than 50 people convicted of “terrorist crimes”.
Score one for the fascist Assad forces.
Of course, Assad has fascist Putin and the Islamonazis of Iran as team members, just to remind everyone who’s who at the totalitarian zoo.

One of al Qaeda’s senior commanders in Syria has been killed in a gun battle with Syrian Arab Army forces in Aleppo.
The al-Nusra Front, the Sunni Islamic jihadist militia fighting against Syrian Government forces in the civil war, confirmed Sheikh Abu Sulaiman al-Masri’s death this morning.
Images of his body, containing a bloody head wound, have been shared online with early reports suggesting he died fighting Assad forces.
Senior commander al-Nusra commander Abu Sulaiman al-Misri had previously been sentenced to death in his native Egypt after he fought for Hamas in Gaza. He fled to Syria and joined the al-Qaeda affiliated group
al-Masri’s real name is believed to be Mahmud Maghwari, an Egyptian national, who had previously been sentenced to death in his homeland for fighting with Hamas in Gaza.
He was killed while commanding troops in Aleppo during a battle against Kurdish forces.
The experienced jihadi had previously had to have his thumb and several fingers amputated after they were badly damaged during in a battle.

There are no good sides in Syria, just other shades of worse.
If you would have told me just after 9/11 a sitting US president 14 yrs later would be arming these 7th century throwbacks, I would have called you crazy. Here is Dr.Andrew Bostom who has been saying the exact same thing all along:
OBAMA TO ARM AND AID AL QAEDA IN SYRIA
“Nowhere in rebel-controlled Syria is there a secular fighting force to speak of”
We have a new entry in the “Who’s going to support terrorists more” sweepstakes. After Putin decided to back Iran’s Shiite terrorists with air strikes, Obama has decided to back Sunni terrorists, many of them allied with Al Qaeda, with air strikes.
The Obama administration backed away Friday from a failed effort to stand up a rebel force in Syria, as the Pentagon announced plans to instead aid existing rebel units that officials believe have better odds of weakening the Islamic State…
The overhaul of U.S. strategy comes as the Obama administration scrambles to adjust to Moscow’s entry into the already crowded Syrian battle space. Russian planes and forces are now backing an offensive by troops loyal to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad against opposition units, complicating the United States’ own air operations over Syria.
The Pentagon will now provide equipment and weapons to vetted Syrian units “so that over time they can make a concerted push into territory still controlled by ISIL,” Pentagon press secretary Peter Cook said. ISIL is another name for the Islamic State, which now controls a wide swath of Syria and Iraq.
The media is skipping over a lot of history here.
Obama only decided to train a vetted rebel force because even he realized that it was impossible to vet any of the “moderate Syrian opposition” that the Smart Power crowd wanted him to back. But I suspect the roots of the failure of the vetted army were aided by Muslim Brotherhood advocates and their sympathizers who want the US to back the Jihadists.
There you have it……..
CONFIRMED: U.S.-BACKED SYRIAN REBELS SURRENDERED WEAPONS TO AL-QAEDA
Another massive embarrassment for the Obama administration, as U.S. officials finally admitted on Friday—after days of strenuous denials—that the latest group of “moderate” New Syrian Force rebels surrendered at least some of their weapons and vehicles to al-Qaeda in exchange for “safe passage” into Syria.
“If accurate, the report of NSF members providing equipment to Al-Nusra Front is very concerning and a violation of Syria train and equip program guidelines,” CNN quotes Col. Patrick Ryder of CENTCOM.
He was referring to reports from Syrian liaisons that the tiny force trained and equipped by the United States had given at least 25 percent of its gear to Jabhat al-Nusra, the al-Qaeda franchise that destroyed the first wave of NSF troops.
“Central Command originally denied that the equipment had made its way to the jihadist group. Al-Nusra tweeted a photo of a rifle issued by U.S. coalition forces this week, but Central Command had determined that the picture was fake,” CNN reports. “But now the U.S. is learning from the rebels that six trucks and some of their ammunition was commandeered by Al-Nusra.”
Once again, as Lori Lowenthal Marcus explained in 2013, “Lone Wolves” are but a change in tactics that Abu Musab al Suri described in his 1600 page manifesto.
Al-Qaeda calls for assassination of US business figures
Al-Qaeda called for lone wolf-style attacks on several prominent U.S. business and economic figures on Wednesday.
The terror group did so in the latest issue of Inspire, its in-house, English-language magazine, the same magazine that reportedly inspired Dzhokhar Tsarnaev and his brother, Tamerlan, to conduct the deadly attack at the 2013 Boston Marathon.
The magazine named at least five prominent American businessmen and two well-known economic figures.
Evil meets evil.
12 victims, 12 masked executioners: ISIS beheads a dozen men accused of fighting for Al Qaeda in new sickening video
Led to their deaths: Hollywood-style graphics begin the clip and show the 12 victims hunched over as they are dragged through a remote stretch of desert to the site where they will be murdered
Forced to kneel: The men are led out into a desert clearing where they are forced to their knees and each man executed by a different masked member of the Islamic State
- Militants savagely executed fellow jihadis for not joining the Islamic State
- 12 victims are understood to have fought for Al Qaeda and Jaish al-Islam
- They are forced to ‘repent’ for their crimes in individual filmed interviews
- Footage then shows them being led through the desert to execution site
- Victims are then handed over to their killers who brutally behead them all
Savage jihadis fighting for the Islamic State in Syria have brutally beheaded 12 men accused of fighting for the terror group’s Al Qaeda and Jaish al-Islam rivals.
Filmed close to Syrian capital and regime stronghold Damascus, the sickening footage shows the terrified men being interviewed and paraded in front of the camera before their bloody execution.
After ‘confessing’ to the crime of opposing ISIS and failing to declare allegiance to the terror group’s bloodthirsty leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the men are led out into a desert clearing where they are forced to their knees and each man executed by a different masked member of the Islamic State.
Sick: Filmed close to Syrian capital and regime stronghold Damascus, the sickening footage shows the terrified men being interviewed and paraded in front of the camera before their bloody execution
Marched: The men walk uncomfortably due to the way their arms are bound, with each forced to wear to bright orange jumpsuits now synonymous with the fanatics depraved beheading films.
Let them leak on each other.
Al Qaeda points finger at ISIS after US drone strikes take out key operatives
Key leaders of Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula have been killed in recent weeks by well-timed CIA drone strikes so precise that they have stoked suspicions that rival terrorist organization ISIS is secretly leaking information to the U.S.
The paranoia spreading within AQAP was fully exposed this week when the members of that branch of Al Qaeda’s international organization publicly executed four men in Yemen who they accused of being “spies” for the U.S. and Saudi Arabia.
One man, identified as Human Al-Hamid, was hung crucifixion-style from a bridge after being accused of calling in the drone strike that killed a top AQAP leader last week. Another unnamed alleged “spy” was crucified alongside Al-Hamid, and two others were shot before a group of about 400 enthusiastic onlookers, according to a video posted Wednesday of the executions.
All the other macabre butchery done by them, well that’s ok.
Which goes to show that trying to stay out of a conflict raging around you with the hope that you’ll go unnoticed, is a wrong strategy, arming yourself to the teeth and training yourself for an eventual fight, is the only option.
Al Nusra Killers in Syrian-Druze Massacre to Face Islamic Trial
The Jabhat al Nusra Syrian rebel group stated on Saturday that the members of its organization who massacred 20 Druze civilians in Syria’s Idlib region last week will face trial in an Islamic Court, according to the Lebanese TV station, MTV.
Al Nusrah said the killings were a violation of orders and the killers would be punished.
The massacre shocked the international Druze community.
The Al Qaida-affiliated al Nusra group want to portray themselves as the liberators of Syria and a more moderate Islamic alternative than ISIS. They have made it a point of not forcing their Islamic views on areas they captured.
But it may too little, too late, as reports in Arab media indicate that the Druze community have begun organizing, and will be joining Assad’s side in the Syrian civil war.
They’ll eventually fall into line with Islamic State.
This is not how A-Q should have been taken down, by another IslamoNazi group.
Al Qaeda leaders say group near collapse amid rise of ISIS, report claims
Two of Al Qaeda’s spiritual leaders have said that the terror organization is barely functioning after losing money and manpower to the rapidly rising Islamic State group, according to a report.
Abu Qatada and Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi have described Al Qaeda as being without “organizational structure,” the Guardian reports. Maqdisi said Al Qaeda leader Ayman Al-Zawahiri is isolated from his top lieutenants and “operates solely based on the allegiance.
“There is no organizational structure. There is only communication channels, and loyalty,” he reportedly said.
Qatada, who was deported to Jordan from Britain in 2013 to face terrorism charges, also acknowledges that ISIS has gotten the better of Al Qaeda in the propaganda wars as well as those fought on the battlefield.
Al Qaeda is experiencing a resurgence on Twitter, as feeds associated with the terrorist group are reaching up to 200,000 extremist followers, according to a new report, which criticizes the social networking service for failing to crack down on radical terror groups.
As Twitter works to crack down on accounts affiliated with the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, it is failing to do the same with al Qaeda-associated accounts, which are routinely “tweeting jihad and martyrdom” to a growing audience of radical followers, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI), which has been tracking the issue for some time.
With terrorist groups becoming increasingly sophisticated on the Internet, Twitter and other social networking services have become key tools for the dissemination of radical propaganda and recruitment.
Though al Qaeda’s ongoing operations have taken a backseat to the exploits of IS, the group founded by Osama bin Laden is thriving on Twitter, according to MEMRI.
Now that’s a sentence.
Supermax prison: “23-hour-per-day, single-cell confinement for an indefinite period of time.”
Bin Laden’s Goebbels is jailed at last: Fanatic who helped al Qaeda boss ‘tell his side’ to ABC and CNN gets life in federal super-max for 1998 US embassy bombings
Guilty: Terrorist Khalid al-Fawwaz is finally to be sentenced today. He was arrested in 1998 for his part in the US Embassy bombings in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar-as-Salam , Tanzania, which killed 224, 12 of them Americans
- Khalid al-Fawwaz was al Qaeda’s original propagandist and listed as its ninth member in terror group documents
- Fanatic organized CNN and ABC interviews with bin Laden in his Afghan lair and received 143 calls from al Qaeda murderer over two years
- ABC’S John Miller met bin Laden after telling intermediaries he wanted to ‘put his side’ and ‘frame’ interview to make ‘arguments reasonable’
- He spread Osama bin Laden’s hate-filled ‘fatwas’ around the world from home in London where he claimed to be a refugee
- Al-Fawwaz’s messages included bin Laden’s call for death to Americans and boast that al Qaeda bombed US embassies in Kenya and Tanzania
- He ran office just few hundred yards from where ISIS mass-murdered Jihadi John was brought up along with father of another notorious ISIS figure
- Al-Fawwaz, 52, was given life sentence and will be locked up in federal super max with other al Qaeda terrorists
When police searched the computer of Khalid al-Fawwaz they found draft after draft of one of the most murderous texts in al-Qaeda’s brief history: the fatwa that launched a holy war against America.
For in his home in a London suburb, Fawwaz was charged by Osama bin Laden with spreading the terror mastermind’s words around the world.
‘It is an obligation upon every tribe in the Arabian Peninsula to engage in Jihad for God’s sake and cleanse their land from the occupiers – Allah knows that their blood is lawful and taking their properties is lawful as well,’ read the final draft of bin Laden’s 1996 call to arms.
‘Whoever kills one of them, should take the dead man’s property.’
He came to be known as al Qaeda’s Goebbels for spreading the hate group’s message – a reference to Joseph Goebbels, the Nazi propagandist.
Today in New York United States District Judge Lewis Kaplan sentenced Fawwaz, 52, to life for his role in the East Africa bombings that killed 224 people in 1998.
In February a jury took three days to find him guilty of four counts of conspiracy, marking the end of a 17-year legal tussle to bring the Saudi national to justice.
He was arrested shortly after bin Laden had announced himself on the world stage with two huge truck bombs that ripped through the US embassies in Nairobi, Kenya, and Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The World War III Jihad just keeps plowing along.
Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate Al-Nusra takes key town in Idlib
Jihadists capture Jisr al-Shughur – the last major government-held city in Idlib province
Al-Qaeda’s Syrian affiliate and its allies seized the last major government-held city in Idlib province on Saturday, in a blow that could expose the regime’s coastal heartland to rebel attack.
The capture of Jisr al-Shughur in the northwestern province comes nearly a month after the same coalition of opposition forces, known as the “Army of Conquest,” overran the provincial capital.
The city’s fall opens up a strategic assault route for the rebels to neighbouring Latakia province on the Mediterranean coast, a bastion of President Bashar al-Assad’s regime, analysts said.
“(Al-Qaeda affiliate) Al-Nusra Front and the Islamist brigades now have complete control of Jisr al-Shughur,” said Rami Abdel Rahman, head of Syrian Observatory for Human Rights.
“There are some ongoing battles outside the city, to the south and east.”
The Britain-based monitoring group said the bodies of at least 60 regime loyalists had been seen on the streets of the city, which was overrun by thousands of rebels.
Who doubts that given the opportunity, they wouldn’t have tried to assassinate him?
Mario Carta, an officer in the DIGOS anti-terrorism unit that carried out the investigation, acknowledged there was no firm evidence of a conspiracy to kill the pope, only “strong suspicions” based on wiretapped conversations in which the suspects had spoken “in ironic terms” about the leader of the world’s Catholics.
Bin Laden allies suspected of Vatican plot
Italian police said on Friday they had dismantled an Islamist network they have linked to Osama bin Laden, one of Pakistan’s deadliest attacks and, more loosely, a possible plot to bomb the Vatican.
A total of 18 people were ordered arrested following a six-year investigation that began with a probe into an illegal immigration racket allegedly run from the island of Sardinia. Only nine of the suspects had been detained by Friday afternoon.
Prosecutor Mauro Mura told a press conference in Cagliari, Sardinia that members of the network had been in contact with two potential suicide bombers who came to Italy in 2010 and discussed the possibility of attacking the Vatican.
The men left Italy when they became aware they were under surveillance and the arrested suspects are not being investigated further on that score, Mura said.
