You’re out Bercow! Boris Johnson declares war on ‘failed’ Speaker who ‘abused’ the process
SPEAKER John Bercow’s days in the Conservative Party could be numbered as the party is plotting to oust him at the next general election, Andrea Leadsom has warned.
The Business Secretary has revealed the Tories will field a candidate against Mr Bercow in his Buckingham constituency, despite this breaching long-standing convention. Ms Leadsom claimed Mr Bercow had “failed” in his role and had permitted a “flagrant abuse” of the parliamentary process. Ms Leadsom wrote in the Mail on Sunday that the Speaker’s role was to be “a politically impartial, independent umpire of proceedings”.
This is because he was given the role “to protect the constitution and oversee the behaviour of the House”.
But she added: “Last week, the current Speaker failed us.”
Her words come after MPs backed a motion to take control of the Commons timetable to pass legislation to block a no-deal Brexit.
The motion was then passed by the House of Lords on Friday.
